Materialities of care for older people
By applying a posthuman perspective to the analysis of care for older people (COP), we analyse the agential cuts (together/apart) enacted by humans (mainly caregivers and older people) and more-than-humans (a camera intra-acting with other objects) whose agential entanglement configures and reconfigures the political economy of the caring apparatus. Our study identifies 'targeting', 'monitoring', and 'aligning' as interrelated caring practices, t…
Shaping flood risk governance through science-policy interfaces
In the face of increasing threats from flooding, there are growing calls to strengthen and improve arrangements of flood risk governance (FRG). This endeavour requires an appreciation of the multitude of factors stabilising and driving governance dynamics. So-called catalyst flood events, policy champions and advocacy coalitions have tended to dominate this study to date, whilst the potential role played by Science Policy Interfaces (SPIs) has be…
Burden of suicide presented as one of the leading causes of death
BACKGROUND: Suicide is a relatively rare incident. Nevertheless, parts of the literature on intentional self-harm behaviour state that suicide is one of the leading causes of death. We aimed to assess the evidence behind the statement that suicide is a leading cause of death across all ages, with reference to the methods of ranking causes of death. METHODS: Two sets of data were used: For the European Union (EU) we used cause specific mortality s…
Managing urban flood resilience as a multilevel governance challenge
Dieperink, C., H. Mees, S. Priest, K. Ek, S. Bruzzone, C. Larrue, and P. Matczak. 2018. Managing urban flood resilience as a multilevel governance challenge: an analysis of required multilevel coordination mechanisms. Ecology and Society 23(1):31. https://doi.org/10.5751/ES-09962-230131
Wildfire forecasting
Forecasting represents the new credo in the reorganization of risks prevention. What does the introduction of such technology mean in terms of fire-fighting practice and policy? By applying Practice-Based Studies, forecasting practice emerges as a form of practical knowledge resulting from the alignment of the forecasting tool with foresters’ former competences, expertise, practices and tools. For foresters wildfire is mainly a criminal act and f…

Risk forecast as work practice
If the use of meteorological data has progressively expanded in tackling different sources of risk, less developed is by contrast a reflection on how meteorological systems apply in local contexts and to what extent that locality may affect the use and the content of forecasting recipients. By focusing on a wildfire forecasting, I show how forecasting practice cannot be reduced to the implementation of meteorological devices; it rather takes shap…
Climate Change and Reorganizing Land Use
Although climate change appears to be a relatively new public issue, it has not emerged onto a tabula rasa ; it affects ‘traditional’ policy sectors. How, then, does this ‘new issue’ interact with established organizational processes, and how is climate change ‘operationalized’ in local practice? Since major events linked to climate change include such things as desertification, climatic migrations, floods and landslides, one might assume that on…
The effects of war losses on mortality estimates for Italy
For countries that experience substantial war losses in a given time period, the exclusion of military deaths can have an important impact on estimates of mortality and life expectancy. In this paper, we start by reviewing Vallinâ s work in accounting
