This report on the marriage records in New Haven, Connecticut, from 1870 through 1950 shows that the "triple-melting-pot" type of assimilation is occurring through intermarriage, with Catholicism, Protestantism, and Judaism serving as the three fundamental bulwarks. Protestant British-Americans, Germans, and Scandinavians intermarry; Catholic Irish, Italians, and Poles form a separate intermarrying group; while Jews remain almost completely endog…

In New Haven a "triple-melting-pot" type of assimilation is occuring through intermarriage, with Catholicism, Protestantism, and Judaism serving as the three fundamental bulwarks. In New Haven the increasing rate of marriage between persons living within twenty blocks of one another (64.43 per cent in 1931;76.31 per cent in 1940) is closely related to ethnic endogamy. While the pattern of in-marriage on a neighborhood basis prevails within every racial and nationality group, it is particularly pronounced among Negroes, Jews, and Italians.
