Eco-poetic Inquiries to inspire Eco-literacy
In my research I explore how practices of eco-poetic inquiry can support learners in developing ecological literacy by deepening their relationships with the Earth. Using examples from courses I teach in language and literacies at the secondary level in a teacher education program in Saskatchewan, I examine how eco-poetic practices also foster joy in this learning. Engaging with eco-poetic inquiries that ask students to describe the connections t…
Merging Eco-Literacy, Visual Poetry, and Arts-Informed Practices
Writing poetry over finger-paintings that are created with natural dyes is an embodied reflexive practice that can help students connect with ideas about eco-justice as they develop a deeper relationship with the Earth. As Kimmerer (2013) explains, “The exchange between plants and people has shaped the evolutionary history of both” (p. 124). Writing practices also shape who we are becoming. Through the creation of visual poetry, I investigate the…
Tramping the Mobius
In this article, we illustrate how outdoor activities that foster the development of human relationships with intact ecosystems are an essential aspect of environmental education. Through a curriculum of oral and literary traditions, this article takes up Ed Rickett’s and Aldo Leopold’s life work and theories (shared by Joseph Campbell and John Steinbeck) as they recount the genesis of Pacific Tidal Pool ecology, also applied to poetry, taxonomy,…
Engaging Eco-Hermeneutical Methods
In this article we highlight the intersection of oral and literary traditions by conceptualizing landscape as archive through an integration of Indigenous knowledges into environmental education curriculum and teaching. We report on a study that focused on the experiences of pre-service teachers who engaged in ecological teachings in an established alternative settings placement as part of a pre-service teacher education program in rural Ontario,…
Contemporary Studies in Environmental and Indigenous Pedagogies
Contemporary Studies in Environmental and Indigenous Pedagogies: A Curricula of Stories and Place. Our book is a compilation of the work of experienced educational researchers and practitioners, all of whom currently work in educational settings across North America. Contributors bring to this discussion, an enriched view of diverse ecological perspectives regarding when and how contemporary environmental and Indigenous curriculum figures into th…
An eco-hermeneutic approach to learning
In this paper we outline philosophical conceptualizations of relationships with language and place. We investigate how place is an essential aspect of language formation and oral tradition. Re-conceptualizing the concept that primary source is inextricably linked to place leads to an eco-hermeneutic analysis of the etymology of language. Our understanding of eco-hermeneutics builds on the work of Kulnieks (2008), Smith (1991, 2003) and Young (200…
