Imagination
The philosopher Mary Warnock (1924-2019) first delivered this article in 1980 as an Oxford University sermon when she was a fellow at St Hugh's College. In it she links aesthetic imagination to her understanding of the Christian 'story'. For her, 'no sharp line can be drawn between imagination employed in the religious mode and the aesthetic imagination'. As a philosopher she was an expert on existentialism and, later, medical ethics. She was als…
Loyalty to the planet
This article reflects upon the concept of ‘loyalty’ to the planet and whether, in the final analysis, such ‘loyalty’ is really a matter of justice at all. Beginning with a meditation upon injustice, and on the notion of rights, this article traces the developments in philosophy that have increasingly enabled a sense of being-in-the-world and renewed appreciation of the lived connections between self and nature. Moving from the radical interiority…
About Time
"Where does all the time go? Despite the burgeoning army of machines designed to save us time - from cars and aeroplanes to dishwashers and microwaves - we don't seem to have any more of it on our hands. We simply fill the space we clear with more things to do - consuming more, spending more - and then look around for new ways of saving time. And so we spiral onwards, upwards, ever faster. Being busy has become a habit, and a habit that gives us …

Critical Reflections on Ownership
In this thought provoking work, Mary Warnock explores what it is to own things, and the differences in our attitude to what we own and what we do not. Starting from the philosophical standpoints of Locke and Hume, the ownership of gardens is presented as a prime example, exploring both private and common ownership, historically and autobiographically. The author concludes that, besides pleasure and pride, ownership brings a sense of responsibilit…
Sex Work in New Zealand
Should trees have standing
The author argues that relevant distinctions between humans, animals and plants should be taken into account when considering the extension of standing to elements of the environment. She argues that the question of standing should not be confused with the question of whether animals or elements of the environment have 'intrinsic value' and that recognising and protecting intrinsic value does not entail or require the granting of standing. Furthe…
Dishonest to God
ETHICS & MORAL PHILOSOPHY. This is a powerful argument that religious and theological issues should have no place in public morality issues such as euthanasia, assisted suicide, and abortion. Here is a pugnacious book by a philosopher who often hits the headlines. The book reflects on the nature of religion and how it relates or ought to relate to the rest of life. Many people today are totally indifferent to religion but religion is far from dea…

Ethics Since 1900
For this new edition of her well-established book Mary Warnock has made a number of additions, in particular a discussion of Rawls's A Theory of Justice. These bring up to date a well-informed and discriminating account of the main ethical problems which have been discussed in the present century in England, the United States, and France. A number of the writings, which deal with these problems, among them those of Moore, Prichard, Ayer, Stevenso…
