Mothers, sons, sisters and grief in the gangster economy
Drawing on long-term participant-observation in Philadelphia’s hyper-segregated Puerto Rican retail narcotics markets, we document the gendered contours of exploding cycles of firearm violence among young males striving to dominate street sales and the grief violence generates. The Moral Economy of Violence in the US Inner City
In an 8-week period, there were 16 shootings with three fatalities, three stabbings, and 14 additional "aggravated assaults" in the four square blocks surrounding our field site in the Puerto Rican corner of North Philadelphia.
