Sex differences in academic achievement in US adolescents
This study investigates mechanisms underlying girls’ academic advantage over boys by examining the role of physical and pubertal maturation. Using longitudinal data from the Add Health study, we analyzed whether sex differences in maturation explain girls’ higher grade 10 GPAs, and whether these associations are mediated by planfulness or impulse control. Path analysis revealed that females’ higher GPAs were partially explained by their advanced …
Unpacking the logics of gendered educational choices
This study aims to unpack one element of the logics of gendered educational choices, namely how cultural beliefs about gender can shape young people’s judgements about gendered educational tracks. Through a survey experiment conducted among secondary school students in Oslo, Norway, we assess respondents’ judgements about fictitious students’ “appropriate” educational choices presented through short vignettes. The study investigates how judgement…
Primary and Secondary Effects of Gender on Educational Attainment
Gender segregation in the labor market is closely related to gender-segregated educational choices. Male- and female-typed fields of study are typically associated with different educational requirements. Educational and occupational aspirations may therefore influence how boys and girls invest in education. The author investigates how gender-typed occupational aspirations and gender differences in educational expectations may help explain the ge…
Characteristics or Returns
Explanations for the persistent pay disparity between similarly qualified men and women vary between women's different and devalued work characteristics and specific processes that result in unequal wage returns to the same characteristics. This article investigates how the gender wage gap is affected by gender differences in detailed work activities among full-time, year-round, college-graduate workers in the US using decomposition analysis in t…
National Policies Supporting Gender Equality in Academic Careers
National policies used to advance gender equality in academic careers in higher education in Sweden, Norway, and Finland, are examined based on publicly available documents from 1990 to 2023.Drawing on theoretical perspectives from public policy research and feminist political theory, we investigate to what extent policies are likely to lead to organizational transformation, in line with the intentions of gender mainstreaming. The analysis maps th…
The Equality Hurdle
This article revisits a central tenet of the welfare state paradox, also known as the inclusion-equality trade-off. Using large-scale survey data for 31 European countries and the United States, collected over a recent 15-year period, the article re-investigates the relationship between female labour force participation and gender segregation. Emphasising the transitional role played by the monetisation of domestic tasks, the study identifies a '…
Advancing women's representation in top academic positions - what works
Which gender equality measures do Nordic universities use, and to what extent are the measures effective in increasing the share of women in top academic positions? Based on theories that distinguish between actor and structure-oriented measures, and between strategies of inclusion and transformation, we identified four types of measures: career enhancing measures offered for women, training and awareness-raising measures, organizational responsi…
The impact of having a child with special needs
This article compares how having a child with special needs shapes the labour market adaptations of immigrant and majority mothers. We use longitudinal data from Norwegian public registers including all women who gave birth between 2001 and 2005 ( N = 104,988), and follow the mothers from two years before birth to four years after birth. We find generally large differences in employment and income among immigrant and majority mothers. Majority mo…
Dynamics of Claims Making and Gender Wage Gaps in the United States and Norway
This paper compares claims making and gender wage gaps in the United States and Norway, and asks how public sector employment moderates the association between gender segregation and the gender gap in wages in the two countries. Using nationally representative data and hierarchical linear modeling, we analyze gender wage gaps within and between job types. The analyses show that job types heavily concentrated in the public sector, effectively insu…

The Meaning of Ethnic Equality in Scandinavian Anti-Discrimination Legislation
Ethnicity is an academically contested concept and has multiple meanings in everyday communication. The present article analyses recent Swedish and Norwegian anti-discrimination law reform documents and asks how policymakers debate the meaning of ethnic equality, and the consequence of this debate for the incorporation of preferential treatment regulation in the law. The analysis suggests that ethnicity must be interpreted through a multifaceted …
Legal Harmonization and Intersectionality in Swedish and Norwegian Anti-discrimination Reform
This article investigates to what extent the challenging questions emerging from the intersectionality literature have been addressed in the process of reforming anti-discrimination legislation in Sweden and Norway. I find that even though intersectionality is presented as relevant for the policy reforms in both countries, the term largely remains abstract and obscure in the policy documents. As a result, other more practical circumstances become…

College Selectivity and Degree Completion
How much of a difference does it make whether a student of a given academic ability enters a more or a less selective four-year college? Some studies claim that attending a more academically selective college markedly improves one's graduation prospects. Others report the reverse: an advantage from attending an institution where one's own skills exceed most other students. Using multilevel models and propensity score matching methods to reduce se…
Is more always better? Early career returns to education in the United States and Norway
Competing Explanations of Undergraduate Noncompletion
In this paper we analyze longitudinal data from a nationally representative panel of college entrants to test and compare several theoretical explanations of college degree attainment and noncompletion. So far, relatively little emphasis has been placed on determining the relative and combined predictive power of competing explanations or mechanisms of college noncompletion. We utilize a methodological tool—the sheaf coefficient—to combine multip…
Two Paths to Inequality in Educational Outcomes
The United States and Norway represent two distinctively different attempts to equalize educational opportunity. Whereas the United States has focused on expansion and the proliferation of lower-tier open-access institutions, Norway has emphasized institutional streamlining and the equalization of living conditions. At the same time, the two countries have similar levels of educational attainment among young adults. Is one model more successful t…
Minority Dropout in Higher Education
The objective of this article is to compare college persistence patterns among minority and majority students in universities and colleges in Norway with that of the United States. Despite differences in the educational systems and economic regimes, both countries face the common challenge of ensuring educational equity, especially among students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and minority students. Using competing risk event hi…
