    A LTHOUGH the cotton industry of Peru dates back to an era before the Spanish occupation, perhaps before the establishment of the picturesque kingdom of the Incas, it has become important commercially only during the last thirty years. The exports of cotton increased from 10 million pounds in 1896 to 90 million in 1924; they now amount in value to 26 per cent of the total exports (average 1921-1925) ranking next to sugar.
