  • Demographic Systems of Medieval Italy (6th-15th century AD)

    Open Access•Irene Barbiera, Gianpiero Dalla‐zuanna•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2024•Referências: 45

In this article, we bring together a variety of studies, both old and new, to examine continuity and change in population dynamics in Italy during the medieval millennium (476-1492 AD). Though the available data are often sporadic and should be interpreted with great caution, it is possible to clarify certain dynamics, which can be useful for guiding future research. First, population fluctuations were not impacted by migration into or out of Ita…

  • Differential Nuptiality and Fertility in the Länder of the Austrian Empire (1828–1865)

Open Access•Fiorenzo Rossi, Irene Barbiera•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•2021

We examine different aspects of nuptiality and fertility in the Länder of the Austrian Empire using the Tafeln zur Statistik der Österreichischen Monarchie (Statistical Tables of the Austrian Monarchy). This source, published from 1829 to 1871, contains data on population and natural movement. After discussing its quality, we study marriage and birth rates, and also age at wedding, illegitimacy ratio, and marital fertility. We find meaningful dif…

  • Du fer et du sang. Le genre des Grandes invasions (ive-vie siècle)

    Irene Barbiera•ARTICLE•Clio•2020

  • A synthetic measure of mortality using skeletal data from ancient cemeteries

    Open Access•Irene Barbiera, Maria Castiglioni et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2018•Citada por: 3•Referências: 21

Due to the scarcity of written sources in ancient historical periods, and thanks to the development of increasingly sophisticated methods of excavation, recognition, publication, and interpretation, archaeology has played an important role in the understan

  • Osteology

    Open Access•Irene Barbiera•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2015

Osteology – from the Greek ostéon , meaning bone – is the study of human and faunal bones. A branch of anatomy, it is relevant both to forensic anthropology and also, to a greater extent, to disciplines dealing with animal and human history, including zooarchaeology, paleontology, physical anthropology, paleopathology, and archaeology. Bones preserve a range of information: they can tell us a past individual's size, gender, age, and nutritional s…

  • Priscille Touraille, Hommes grands, femmes petites

    Irene Barbiera, Christiane Klapisch-Zuber•ARTICLE•Clio•2013

  • Population Dynamics in Italy in the Middle Ages

    Open Access•Irene Barbiera, Gianpiero Dalla‐zuanna•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2009•Citada por: 26•Referências: 45

Studies of settlements in Italy indicate that during the Early Middle Ages (6th-9th centuries) the Italian population was stagnant, whereas a slow but persistent growth followed during the High Middle Ages (10th-13th). However, the components of the dynamics of the Italian population in the long period between the Justinian Plague (around 565 in Italy) and the Black Death (1348) are largely unknown. In this article, data from anthropometric analy…
