  • Materials Characterization and Technological Aspects of Hellenistic Grey Ware Lamps From Nysa‐Scythopolis (Israel)

    Open Access•D Ashkenazi, Anat Cohen-Weinberger et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026

Grey ware lamp fragments and a production waster from Tell Iẓṭabba (Israel) were analyzed to determine their manufacturing technology and provenance. These were compared with a light brown‐orange reference fabric from the same site. Macroscopic inspection, petrography, SEM‐EDS, and XRD analyses were applied to assess composition, microstructure, fabric, pigment, and firing technology. The grey ware lamps exhibit a consistent mineralogical signatu…

  • Decoding 19th-century marine ironwork

Open Access•D Ashkenazi, Noam Iddan et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeomaterials•2025

Shipwrecks provide valuable context for historical events, shedding light on trade connections, economic changes, naval battles, and evolution of technologies. Case studies of metallurgical characterization of 19th-century iron artefacts retrieved from shipwrecks off the Israeli coast revealed crucial information about composition, microstructure, and manufacturing processes, useful in dating and tracing the origin of the raw material. Chemical a…

  • From the hills to the sea

Open Access•Philip Ebeling, Liora Bouzaglou et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeomaterials•2024

This paper presents the results of a multidisciplinary approach characterizing roof tiles excavated at the Ashdod-Yam Byzantine church (Israel). Occupied from the late fourth/early fifth century CE, the building was destroyed by fire toward the end of the sixth century CE, sealed by tiles from the roof's collapse. The assemblage of 3846 roof tiles was initially classified through macroscopic and typological analysis. Selected samples were further…

  • A Medieval Book Fitting(?) from the ‘Atlit Castle

    Vardit R Shotten-Hallel, Vardit Shotten-Hallel et al.•ARTICLE•Atiqot•2024

A metal object found on the surface at the ‘Atlit Castle was identified as a book fitting. Although such mounts could have served other functions, such as inlays, belt or girdle mounts, this artifact was probably an anchor-plate, part of a book clasp for a medieval codex, possibly of religious content, bound in a leather cover. Visual testing inspection and SEM-EDS analysis of the book fitting have shown that the item was made of a heterogeneous …

  • What You Clean Is What You Get

Open Access•Maayan Cohen, Alexandra Inberg et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2022•Referências: 6

Thirteen Late Roman copper alloy coins with a dark concretion layer from the Early Islamic period Ma‘agan Mikhael B shipwreck were chosen to undergo an experimental chemical cleaning and polishing procedure for removing the concretion while limiting the damage to the surviving metal. These coins, and two more without concretion discovered on the beach nearby, were then subjected to a series of non-destructive analyses–visual testing, XRF, multi-f…

  • Metallurgical Characterization of a Copper-Alloy Aramaic-Inscribed Object from Tulûl Mas‘ud (Elyakhin)

    Open Access•D Ashkenazi, Rafael Y Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Humans•2022•Referências: 15

An Aramaic-inscribed object made of copper-alloy was discovered in 1993 in the south-western part of Tulûl Mas‘ud (Moshav Elyakhin) and has recently been studied using an archaeometallurgical approach. Based on visual testing and multifocal light microscopy observation, the object was probably produced in a nearby workshop, with the inscription engraved using a sharp tool during the production process. Given the larger assemblage of inscribed cop…

The Akko 1 shipwreck was an Egyptian armed vessel, built at the beginning of the 19th century. A wooden saw handle and a box containing iron nails and two split pins were discovered towards the stern. Given their function, location and context, these were part of the ship's carpenter's tools and accessories. A methodology was developed for conducting systematic metallurgical analysis in order to understand the manufacturing process of the survivi…

Selected iron arrowheads and bolts retrieved from the destruction layer of the Crusader castle of Arsur/Arsuf, which was taken down by the Mamluk army (headed by Baybars) in late April 1265, were studied. Being the only site within the boundaries of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem that has thus far yielded more than 1200 iron arrowheads, an archaeometallurgical characterization was performed. The aim of this research was to study the warfare metho…
