A 23-Year Retrospective Blind Check of Accuracy of the Copenhagen Radiocarbon Dating System
A 23-yr record of the measuring accuracy of the Copenhagen radiocarbon dating laboratory has retrospectively been provided through a true blind test. A total of 92 samples of oak from old tree trunks were dated in the period 1971 to 1993 and their dendrochronological age determined independently. The 14 C activity of the dendrochronological samples measured in the Copenhagen radiocarbon laboratory was compared to the activity of the tree rings of…
The Eem Stable Isotope Record along the GRIP Ice Core and Its Interpretation
A 3029-m-long deep ice core extending nearly to bedrock has been drilled at the very top of the Greenland ice sheet (Summit) by the Greenland Ice-core Project (GRIP), an international European joint effort organized by the European Science Foundation. The ice core reaches back to 250,000 yr B.P. according to dating based partly on stratigraphic methods and partly on ice-flow modeling. A continuous and detailed stable isotope (δ 18 O) profile alon…
Age and diet of the mummified Eskimos from Qilakitsoq
By means of C-14 measurements, six samples from the mummies found at Qilakitsoq have been dated to the period AD 1460-1510, with a mean close to AD 1470. Combined C-13 and C-14 analyses of tissue from the four-year-old boy in Grave I suggest that 75 ± 7% of his diet consisted of marine food components, while the remaining 25 % were of terrestrial origin
New C-14 Datings of Late Palaeolithic Cultures from Northwestern Europe
New and more accurate C-14 dates of Alfred Rust's classical finds from Poggenwisch, Meiendorf, and Stellmoor have been carried out. At all three localities, find assemblages of the Hamburgian Cultu
Ice-Core Dating of the Pleistocene/Holocene Boundary Applied to a Calibration of the 14 C Time Scale
Seasonal variations in 18 O content, in acidity, and in dust content have been used to count annual layers in the Dye 3 deep ice core back to the Late Glacial. In this way the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary has been absolutely dated to 8770 BC with an estimated error limit of ± 150 years. If compared to the conventional 14 C age of the same boundary a value of Δ 14 C = 53 ± 13‰ is obtained. This Δ 14 C value suggests that 14 C levels during the La…
Stable Nitrogen Isotope Ratios of Bone Collagen Reflect Marine and Terrestrial Components of Prehistoric Human Diet
The δ 15 N values of bone collagen from Eskimos and from Northwest Coast Indians dependent on salmon fishing are about 10 per mil more positive than those from agriculturalists in historic times. Among prehistoric humans, two groups dependent on marine food sources show bone collagen δ 15 N values that are 4 to 6 per mil more positive than those from two agricultural groups. The nitrogen isotope ratios of bone collagen from prehistoric inhabitant…
Possible Depletion in 14 C in Trees Growing in Calcareous Soils
14 C activities of decadal samples from beech trees growing under extreme calcareous conditions were compared to 14 C activities of decadal samples of the same age from a beech tree growing in a normal mold soil in order to see whether part of the carbon assimilated during photosynthesis might originate from 14 C-deficient carbonates in the soil. The calcareous soils contained from 18 to 52% calcium carbonate, and this carbonate had a mean 14 C a…
C evidence for dietary habits of prehistoric man in Denmark
Copenhagen Radiocarbon Dates X
The following list comprises a selected number of measurements made on archaeologic samples from 1959 to December 1971. Measurements of geologic samples will be given in a later date list. A survey of the radiocarbon chronology for the Danish Mesolithic and Neolithic, ensuing from these and previously published dates from the laboratory, has recently been compiled (Tauber, 1972)
Radiocarbon chronology of the Danish Mesolithic and Neolithic
For some years it has been obvious that the new tree-ring-calibrated radiocarbon dates would necessitate a drastic revision in conventional time scales and in the whole structure of cultural relationships developed for the European Mesolithic and Neolithic. The full assessment of the new pattern, however, has to await the time when relative archaeological sequences, based on stratigraphy and supposed cross-datings, become supplemented with or rep…
Copenhagen Radiocarbon Dates IX
The following list comprises a selected number of measurements made up to October, 1967. Age calculations are based on 95% of the activity of the NBS oxalic-acid standard, and on a half-life for C 14 of 5570 yr. Results are reported in yr before 1950, and in the A.D./B.C. scale. Errors quoted include standard deviations of the count rates for the unknown sample, contemporary value, and background. Because possible errors arising from isotopic fra…
Copenhagen Radiocarbon Measurements VIII Geographic Variations in Atmospheric C 14 Activity
The following list covers measurements of bomb-produced C 14 in series of cereals and grasses collected on the northern hemisphere from 1956 through 1966. Samples were measured in order to determine the yearly addition of bomb produced C 14 at a single locality, and to detect possible geographic variations in the distribution and uptake of bomb-generated C 14 in terrestrial plant material during years with greatly varying additions of bomb C 14 .…
Copenhagen Radiocarbon Dates VII
The following list comprises a selected number of measurements made up to November, 1965. Age calculations are based on a contemporary value equal to 95% of the activity of the NBS oxalic-acid standard, and on a half life for C 14 of 5570 yr. Results are reported in years before 1950, and in the A.D./B.C. scale. Errors quoted include the standard deviations of the count rates for the unknown sample, the contemporary value, and the background. Bec…

Copenhagen Radiocarbon Dates VI
The following list comprises a selected number of measurements made up to November 1963. Age calculations are based on a contemporary value equal to 95% of the activity of the NBS oxalic-acid standard, and on a half life for C 14 of 5570 ± 30 yr. Results are expressed in years before 1950 and in the b.c.-a.d. scales. Errors quoted include the standard deviations of the count rates for the unknown sample, the contemporary value, and the background…

Copenhagen Radiocarbon Dates V
The following list includes samples dated in the period 1956–1961. Age calculations are based on a contemporary value equal to 95% of the activity of the NBS oxalic-acid standard, and on a half life for C 14 of 5568 ± 30 yr
