The Art of Self-Defense
In his “On the Concept of History,” Walter Benjamin asks what memory can mean at “a moment of danger.” Suggesting that we all are at such a moment of danger today, I discuss what role and function literary memory can play or fulfill in an age marked by right-wing extremism, climate change, authoritarian governments, as that age in its complexity is represented in three contemporary, but different, Swedish literary diaries by Lars Norén, Ulf Lunde…
Säga nej
In 2011, during the occupation of Zucotti Park in New York, Occupy Wall Street arranged a public reading of Herman Melville’s novella Bartleby, 1853. The widely discussed choice of this story points to OWS’s own politics: the movement said ”no”, but without forming any more specific demands for reform. This article, taking its theoretical lead from Judith Butler, Marcello Tarì and Michel Foucault, discusses if the self can be re-modelled. Bartleb…
Specification Search in Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)
Although structural equation model (SEM) is a powerful and widely applied tool particularly in social sciences, few studies have explored how SEM and statistical learning methods can be combined. The purpose of this paper is to explore how gradient component-wise boosting (GCB) can contribute to item selection. We ran 200 regressions with different farmer psychological variables collected to explain variation in an animal welfare indicator (AWI).…
A Faster Procedure for Estimating CFA Models Applying Minimum Distance Estimators with a Fixed Weight Matrix
This paper presents a numerically more efficient implementation of the quadratic form minimum distance (MD) estimator with a fixed weight matrix for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) models. In structural equation modeling (SEM) computer software, such as EQS, lavaan, LISREL and Mplus, various MD estimators are available to the user. Standard procedures for implementing MD estimators involve a one-step approach applying non-linear optimization t…
“Incisive, Dissonant” Rationality vs. Aesthetic Modernism
The Swedish “Welfare State” of the 1950s was described as a rational, well-organized society by leading Swedish philosopher, Professor Ingemar Hedenius. His biopolitical vision emphasized the scientific basis for social reforms, and he was an active opponent to any kind of religious thinking. Hedenius also worked as a literary critic, and he would use that role to confront literary representations of contemporary society that did not fit in with …
Patient Centeredness from a Perspective of History of the Present
The overall aim of this study, performed in Sweden, was to problematize the contemporary national and transnational discourse on patient centeredness, which during recent decades has become a given, having become established as a dogma in conversations, writing, and thinking about patients and health care. We did that by showing that ideas such as patient centeredness can be seen differently from the way they are depicted in contemporary discours…
A Simple Simulation Technique for Nonnormal Data with Prespecified Skewness, Kurtosis, and Covariance Matrix
We present and investigate a simple way to generate nonnormal data using linear combinations of independent generator (IG) variables. The simulated data have prespecified univariate skewness and kurtosis and a given covariance matrix. In contrast to the widely used Vale-Maurelli (VM) transform, the obtained data are shown to have a non-Gaussian copula. We analytically obtain asymptotic robustness conditions for the IG distribution. We show empiri…

Nostalgia, the Future, and the Past as Pedagogical Technologies
This article provides a genealogical perspective on narratives about the past and the future as governmental discourses in teacher education, public health, and criminal justice in Sweden. Contemporary governmental strategies bring nostalgic memories of the past and visions and fears about the future back to life in the present. The past (history) is a technology of the present to re-memorialize who “we” are and have been. The future is a spatial…
The Learning Society, the Unfinished Cosmopolitan, and Governing Education, Public Health and Crime Prevention at the Beginning of the Twenty‐First Century
The ‘learning society’ expresses principles of a universal humanity and a promise of progress that seem to transcend the nation. The paper indicates how this society is governed in the name of a cosmopolitan ideal that despite its universal pretensions embodies particular inclusions and exclusions. These occur through inscribing distinctions and differentiations between the characteristics of those who embody a cosmopolitan reason that brings soc…
A Measure of Agreement for Interval or Nominal Multivariate Observations by Different Sets of Judges
This article addresses the problem of accounting overall multivariate chance-corrected interobserver agreement when targets have been rated by different sets of judges (not necessarily equal in number). The proposed approach builds on Janson and Olsson’s multivariate generalization of Cohen’s kappa but incorporates weighting for number of judges and applies an expression for expected disagreement suitable for the case with different judges. The a…
Two Equivalent Discrepancy Functions for Maximum Likelihood Estimation
Over the years several discrepancy functions have been introduced both in the literature and in the software of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The test statistics for the discrepancy functions associated with Maximum Likelihood (ML), Generalized Least Squares (GLS), and Normal Theory Weighted Least Squares (NWLS) are all asymptotically equivalent. These test statistics are all approximately distributed as central chi-square under correct mod…

Economic history as a subject is customarily likened on formal occasions to a landbridge uniting two scholarly continents: the economic and the historical. It can also be said that the subject is marked by two peculiarities. For more than a century it has stood outside mainstream economics, been an alternative, a subterranean current. In the same way it has always had to struggle in a subordinate relation to the subject of pure history, whether t…
A Measure of Agreement for Interval or Nominal Multivariate Observations
This article addresses the problem of accounting overall chance-corrected interobserver agreement among the multivariate ratings of several judges. Modifying an approach by Berry and Mielke, a generalization of Cohen’s kappa coefficient is proposed. The generalized statistic accounts agreement for multivariate interval or nominal observations among several judges. The statistic’s metric is conventional, and in the univariate case it is equivalent…
The Performance of ML, GLS, and WLS Estimation in Structural Equation Modeling Under Conditions of Misspecification and Nonnormality
This simulation study demonstrates how the choice of estimation method affects indexes of fit and parameter bias for different sample sizes when nested models vary in terms of specification error and the data demonstrate different levels of kurtosis. Using a fully crossed design, data were generated for 11 conditions of peakedness, 3 conditions of misspecification, and 5 different sample sizes. Three estimation methods (maximum likelihood [ML], g…
Theoretic Fit and Empirical Fit
In research the goal is often to construct models that reflect the structures and parameters of some unobservable causal mechanism. The degree of isomorphis between such a theoretic model and a "true" model can be labeled "theoretic fit." In the absence of direct evidence that the researcher's theoretic model accurately reflects the true model, indices of "empirical fit" (Chi-Square, etc.) are used as indirect evidence of versimilitude. The issue…

The purpose of this article is to explain some of the characteristics of the Swedish welfare system as it emerged after the Second World War. It discusses the ideological background, the creation of the instruments, and the implementation process as a sequence beginning in the 1930s
Business history as economic history
Since economic history became established as an academic discipline in the Swedish universities in the 1950s, more than ISO doctoral dissertations have been published. Of these, about 10% can be characterized as business monographs, while roughly another 10% deal with aspects of trade and industry, relying mainly on business archives. Business history, accordingly, has become an established part of economic history in Sweden. Most of the literatu…
Recent research in Sweden on the standard of living during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries
The elucidation of the living conditions of ordinary people has always been one of the principal concerns of Swedish economic history research. The aim of this brief survey is to depict the orientation of that research during the past 10–15 years. I shall confine myself to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, since scholars have generally concentrated on that very interesting period, during which there took place a dramatic structural transfo…

A Longitudinal Factor Model For Studying Change In Ability Structure
Models of the Longitudinal Factor Analysis type were designed to describe the development of ability structure between the ages 10 and 13. The parameters of the models were estimated by the LISREL program (Jöreskog & van Thillo, 1973). The sample comprised 375 girls and 353 boys who were tested at age 10 and retested at age 13 with six ability tests and two achievement tests. The results indicate that verbal, inductive, and spatial abilities can …

Maximum Likelihood Estimation of the Polychoric Correlation Coefficient
The polychoric correlation is discussed as a generalization of the tetrachoric correlation coefficient to more than two classes. Two estimation methods are discussed: Maximum likelihood estimation, and what may be called “two-step maximum likelihood” estimation. For the latter method, the thresholds are estimated in the first step. For both methods, asymptotic covariance matrices for estimates are derived, and the methods are illustrated and comp…
On The Robustness Of Factor Analysis Against Crude Classification Of The Observations
The paper is concerned with the consequences for maximum likelihood factor analysis which may follow if the observed variables are ordinal with only a few scale steps, which are assigned integer values. It is hypothesized that the observed variables are obtained through a classification of some true variables, which are multivariate normal and for which a factor model holds. Using simple formulas for the relations between true correlations and co…
