  • Regional Inequalities in Infant Mortality in Britain, 1861-1971

    C H Lee•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1991•Citada por: 20

In this paper long-run changes in infant mortality for 55 regions of Great Britain are examined. A diverse pattern of change, substantially different from the familiar aggregate trend of stability before 1900, followed by general decline, was revealed. In some regions, those with the lowest infant mortality rates, there was improvement from the 1860s, while elsewhere rates increased. Hence several measures of inequality indicated divergence betwe…

Recent work suggests that economic development, at national level, does not produce the infinity of patterns which historians have sometimes suggested, but that there are a small number of basic types of development. AT least since Mandeville's Fable of the Bees (I728), there have been underconsumptionists who have ascribed trade depressions to deficiency in consumption expenditures.' Underconsumptionist thought may further be subdivided into two schools. Monetary underconsumptionism, which does not concern us here, blames underconsumption upon flaws in the processes of creation and circulation of money and credit. Social Credit movement in Great Britain and …
