From Likert Scales to Large Language Models
Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) offer new assessment approaches that can help overcome the limitations of traditional Likert-item scales in measuring complex, subjective constructs. To demonstrate this, we introduce and validate a novel LLM-based methodology for psychological assessment by applying it to Future Self-Continuity (FSC), the perceived connection, including similarity, vividness, and positivity, between present and fut…

Struggles in the Orthodox Jewish shidduch dating system—A large‐scale qualitative analysis
Marriage is an important life goal and is highly valued among Orthodox Jews. Shidduch dating refers to the arranged dating system that is typically used within the community. Previous research and anecdotal evidence suggest that the shidduch system has become difficult and challenging for many individuals, yet there is a dearth of evidence on the subject. This study set out to explore issues related to dating and marriage within the Orthodox Jewi…
The Relationship Between Future Self-Continuity and Suicide Risk in Military Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury
Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) have an increased risk for suicide. A lack of Future-Self Continuity (FSC), which refers to the sense of “psychological connectedness” that a person has between their present and future selves, has also been associated with suicide risk. For this study, 308 U.S. military veterans, 39 of whom self-reported a TBI, completed a series of questionnaires to assess future self-continuity and suicidality. The re…
Examining Average Age at First Marriage within Orthodox Judaism
Marriage trends across global communities are influenced by demographic and cultural factors. The marriage age of secular Americans, and multiple religious groups are affected by gender and religious affiliation, but this has not been examined in Orthodox Jewish subcultures. This study explored how gender, cultural affiliation, and shifting cultural affiliation affect the age at first marriage within Orthodox Jewish subcultures differing in openn…
Experimentally Increasing Self-Continuity Improves Subjective Well-Being and Protects against Self-Esteem Deterioration from an Ego-Deflating Task
‘Self-continuity,’ or ‘continuous identity’ is the sense of cross-temporal persistence of identity and is associated with positive mood and decreased suicidality. Few studies have examined whether self-continuity is affected by reviewing cross-temporal patterns of personality traits and if increasing self-continuity improves subjective well-being. Study 1 examined the effects of writing about patterns of cross-temporal personality traits and foun…
The Cognitive Underpinnings of Continuous Identity
Continuous identity (CI) is a sense of persistent identity wherein the present self is seen as overlapping with the past and future selves. This study addressed the hypothesis that judgments of CI require successful retrieval of information by examining the relationship between varying levels of CI and two forms of memory recall. The pattern of findings indicated that high levels of cued memory recall combined with low levels of heuristic usage w…
