  • Respecting IHL obligations to the deceased does make a difference

Open Access•Jane Taylor, Pierre Guyomarc’h et al.•ARTICLE•International Review of the Red…•2025

The posthumous identification of Argentine soldiers killed in action during the international armed conflict in the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas was the result of the Humanitarian Project Plan, an unprecedented humanitarian forensic operation carried by the International Committee of the Red Cross at the request of Argentina and the United Kingdom. As a result of respect for international humanitarian law obligations to the dead and the novel …

  • New Biological Data on a Gravettian Humerus from the Cussac Cave (Dordogne, France)

    Open Access•Pierre Guyomarc’h, Vitale Sparacello et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 38

This article reports on a complete left human humerus from the Cussac Cave (Dordogne, France), dating to the Gravettian, or Mid-Upper Palaeolithic. This humerus is characterised by a very marked retroversion, significant intracortical porosity, an unusual morphology and orientation of the medial epicondyle, and a marked depression at the bottom of the olecranon fossa. These morphological features could be related to mechanical stimuli, but this i…

  • An overview of the latest developments in facial imaging

    Open Access•Carl N Stephan, Jodi M Caple et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Sciences Research•2019

Facial imaging is a term used to describe methods that use facial images to assist or facilitate human identification. This pertains to two craniofacial identification procedures that use skulls and faces-facial approximation and photographic superimposition-as well as face-only methods for age progression/regression, the construction of facial graphics from eyewitness memory (including composites and artistic sketches), facial depiction, face ma…

  • A method of sexing the human os coxae based on logistic regressions and Bruzek's nonmetric traits

    Open Access•Frédéric Santos, Pierre Guyomarc’h et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2019•Citada por: 9•Referências: 49

OBJECTIVES: This study aims at proposing a visual method for sexing the human os coxae based on a statistical approach, using a scoring system of traits described by Bruzek (2002). This method is evaluated on a meta-population sample, where the data were acquired by direct observation of dry bones as well as computed tomography (CT) scans. A comparison with the original Bruzek's (2002) method is performed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five hundred and …

  • New data on the paleobiology of the Gravettian individual L2A from Cussac cave (Dordogne, France) through a virtual approach

  • Potential Contributions of Korean Pleistocene Hominin Fossils to Palaeoanthropology

    C J Bae, Pierre Guyomarc’h•ARTICLE•Asian perspectives•2015

Traditionally, one of the primary problems hindering a better understanding of the “origin of modern humans” debate is the paucity of information coming out of eastern Asia. Here, we report a set of hominin fossils from Ryonggok, a late Pleistocene cave site located in the paleoanthropologically poorly known region of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Ryonggok is best known for the presence of vertebrate fossils that represent the remain…

  • Multiple Calvarial Lytic Lesions

    Open Access•Frédéric Bauduer, M Bessou et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014•Citada por: 2•Referências: 43

A skull from the early French Medieval period presenting multiple destructive lesions is investigated. The study of this presumably young female skull suggests a series of possible diagnoses using macroscopic features, standard radiography, CT, and 3D analysis. After a review of the paleopathological and medical literature, the debate focuses on several malignant disorders (cancerous metastases, multiple myeloma), Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a…
