An Immovable Object? In-Group Qualifiers, Credibility, and Expert Claims on Punitive Sex Crime Policy
Punitive policy approaches toward individuals convicted of sexual offenses (ICSOs) remain popular despite limited evidence of their effectiveness. Science communicators face substantial challenges in shifting public opinion on these issues, and prior research suggests that advocating for less punitive but more effective policies can undermine perceived expert credibility. This study reports results from a survey experiment with U.S. adults examin…
Using Bayesian Mixed Effect Generalized Linear Models to Evaluate Criminological Interventions
Shooting the Messenger
Policies regulating individuals convicted of sexual offenses (ICSOs) are widely supported, despite little empirical evidence that they promote public safety. While research suggests this support is unresponsive to counterevidence, the mechanisms underlying these findings remain unclear. Here we consider whether assessments of an expert’s credibility are impacted by advocating for non-punitive approaches to ICSOs (vs. individuals convicted of drun…
Describing the Hazard of Recidivism Among Individuals Convicted of Sex-Related Offenses
This study uses administrative data from Michigan to present a descriptive analysis of recidivism hazard among a large cohort of individuals convicted of sex-related offenses (ICSOs) ( N = 23,621) with an average follow-up of 10.5 years, up to a maximum of 15 years. Using Bayesian discrete-time survival models, we find within 15 years 19% of this cohort of ICSOs was returned to prison, for either a new crime or technical violation, or received a …
Hydrological evolution of a shallow lake in the semiarid Fuegian steppe, southern Argentina, during the last ~7000 years based on multiproxy data
The climate in southern Patagonia is heavily influenced by the Southern Westerly Winds (SWW). Therefore, climate reconstructions from this region are valuable for our understanding of the temporal dynamics in the atmospheric circulation of the Southern Hemisphere. In this study a sedimentary record from the shallow lake Laguna Amalia – located in the semiarid Fuegian steppe of Tierra del Fuego (53°S) – was used to study how the hydroclimate in th…

Estimating the Prevalence of Forced Labor Among Domestic Workers in Tunis, Tunisia
Going Off the Grid
This research examines factors associated with departures from sentencing guidelines for a sample of individuals convicted of sexual offenses in Pennsylvania between 2004 and 2015 ( N = 26,093). We contribute to the literature on the sentencing of these cases by considering whether the impact of individual and contextual factors is conditioned by the type of sexual offense being sentenced (e.g., assaultive, child pornography, failure to comply wi…
Lake Sedimentary DNA Research on Past Terrestrial and Aquatic Biodiversity
The use of lake sedimentary DNA to track the long-term changes in both terrestrial and aquatic biota is a rapidly advancing field in paleoecological research. Although largely applied nowadays, knowledge gaps remain in this field and there is therefore still research to be conducted to ensure the reliability of the sedimentary DNA signal. Building on the most recent literature and seven original case studies, we synthesize the state-of-the-art an…
Psychological Distress Among Bhutanese Refugees Living in the Northeast Region of the United States
The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of psychological distress among adult Bhutanese refugees living in the United States. We recruited 376 adult Bhutanese refugees living in the northeast US region, the majority of whom were employed, married men in their 40 s who were US citizens. Using Bayesian Negative Binomial Regression modelling, we examined the impact of sociodemographic measures, health status and refugee integration measu…
Environmental footprint of small-scale, historical mining and metallurgy in the Swedish boreal forest landscape
The history of mining and smelting and the associated pollution have been documented using lake sediments for decades, but the broader ecological implications are not well studied. We analyzed sediment profiles covering the past ~10,000 years from three lakes associated with an iron blast furnace in central Sweden, as an example of the many small-scale furnaces with historical roots in the medieval period. With a focus on long-term lake-water qua…
New insights from XRF core scanning data into boreal lake ontogeny during the Eemian (Marine Isotope Stage 5e) at Sokli, northeast Finland
Biological proxies from the Sokli Eemian (Marine Isotope Stage 5e) paleolake sequence from northeast Finland have previously shown that, unlike many postglacial records from boreal sites, the lake becomes increasingly eutrophic over time. Here, principal components (PC) were extracted from a high resolution multi-element XRF core scanning dataset to describe minerogenic input from the wider catchment (PC1), the input of S, Fe, Mn, and Ca-rich det…
Late-Holocene climate and vegetation dynamics in eastern Lesotho highlands
The eastern Lesotho highlands are of considerable hydrological importance to southern Africa as a so-called ‘water tower’ for the surrounding region. Here, we contribute proxy-data inferring climate and vegetation changes over the past 1600 years, assessing in parallel inorganic and organic chemical analyses on a sediment core from Ladybird wetland, eastern Lesotho. Several proxies were used to determine changes in local vegetation dynamics, prod…
Employment and Housing Challenges Experienced by Sex Offenders during Reentry on Parole
Although the general offender populations are known to experience numerous barriers to successful community reentry from prison, existing research suggests that barriers for sex offenders may be particularly acute. This research qualitatively examines the barriers to two key reentry dimensions—employment and housing—experienced by a sample of sex offenders (n = 65) during reentry on parole, while also drawing on a comparison sample of nonsex offe…

Public Support for Emergency Shelter Housing Interventions Concerning Stigmatized Populations
Research Summary We examine citizen decision‐making in the context of providing access to safe housing to different noncriminal and criminal populations. More than 4,000 national online survey respondents considered different “emergency housing policy” scenarios that would affect the housing conditions of one of five randomly assigned populations of varying stigma (three noncriminal, two criminal). We find that the criminal populations had the le…
A Multimethod Examination of the Dynamics of Recidivism During Reentry
Research on prisoner reentry has indicated that the transition to the community can be a tumultuous process. Despite this growing understanding, research has continued to operationalize recidivism as a terminal event in the reentry experience, categorizing returning prisoners as recidivists and nonrecidivists. Using detailed mixed methods with a small cohort of parolees, this inquiry documents the dynamic nature, timing, and context of recidivism…

Revisiting Key Sedimentary Archives Yields Evidence Of A Rapid Onset Of Mining In The Mid‐13th Century At The Great Copper Mountain, Falun, Sweden
Mining in Falun, Sweden, was first mentioned in a deed from ad 1288, but previous studies of peat and lake sediments inferred that mining began during the fifth to eighth centuries. In order to reassess these findings, we performed new geochemical analyses on new samples from three key sites: Tisksjöbergets myr, a buried mire alongside the mine; Tisken, a small lake in Falun; and Runn, the main recipient for waters draining through Falun. At Tisk…
Anticipated Stigma and Defensive Individualism During Postincarceration Job Searching
Obtaining employment is one of the most difficult challenges for individuals released from prison. This research explores the strategies recently released male parolees employ in attempting to find work, with specific attention to the role of anticipated stigma from their ex-convict status. Through the use of in-depth longitudinal interviews, this research contributes to our understanding of returning prisoner's experiences in job searching. We f…
The Effect and Implications of Sex Offender Residence Restrictions
Research Summary We evaluated the efficacy of sex offender residence restrictions in Michigan and Missouri using a quasi‐experimental design with propensity score matching. First, we examined the implementation of the laws and found that sex offenders in both states were less likely to live in restricted areas after the implementation of the laws than the prerestriction sample, but the differences were not statistically significant. In our outcom…

Evaluating paleoproxies for peat decomposition and their relationship to peat geochemistry
The past decade has seen a rapid increase in interest in the biogeochemical record preserved in peat, particularly as it relates to carbon dynamics and environmental change. Importantly, recent studies show that carbon dynamics, that is, organic matter decomposition, can influence the record of atmospherically derived elements such as halogens and mercury. Most commonly, bulk density, light transmission, or carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios are used a…

The Effect of Higher Education on Police Behavior
In the past, police scholars have examined the impact of higher education on different measures of officer behavior, most notably arrest and the use of force. Much of this prior work has suffered from poor methodologies, such as inadequate samples and the inability to control for theoretically relevant variables. In addition, previous inquires have focused on but one single behavior per study. In an attempt to overcome some of these limitations, …
