The general pure food law was passed only after a long evolutionary process in which the education of public opinion was the prime moving force. Between January 20, 1879, when the first bill designed primarily to prevent the adulteration of food was introduced in the House of Representatives, and June 30, 1906, when the Pure Food Law was signed, 190 measures relating to specific foods were introduced.
