Nästan jobb? Betydelser av kön, plats och tid i den liminala tillvaron som influencer
The feminine-coded work as an influencer has emerged as young women have transformed their personal life stories and self- representations on social media into digital businesses. Despite similarities with other forms of media production, the concept of work is vague, both in the public’s perception of what influencers do and for influencers themselves. It is challenging to differentiate between what is work and what is not, partly because influe…
Our Boy Whitey
This article provides an example of how middle-aged women rediscover and express emotions in digital media, mainly sexual desire but also the joy they feel among like-minded women of the same age. The ethnographic case is a community of European and North American women aged around 40 to 60 years who sexually desire 20-year-old TikTok celebrity William White. White went viral when he began lip-syncing to 1980s hits, particularly Barry Manilow's '…
Set in motion. Paradoxical narratives of becoming Swedish digital media influencers
This article analyzes how Swedish digital media influencers make sense of their careers in print media interviews and autobiographical books. I explore how influencers use metaphors involving motion, speed and acceleration to describe, explain and legitimate the various circumstances and phases of their career development, and how these metaphors may be viewed in the wider context of social acceleration and conflicting gender norms. I show that t…
Autobiographical Convergences
Autobiographical ConvergencesA Cultural Analysis of Books by Swedish Digital Media Influencers Gabriella Nilsson (bio) I've always wanted to write a book. I don't know why, though, since my dyslexia makes it difficult for me to even read. It feels completely crazy and very exciting with a book that is just about me. At the same time, it is sad that you can write an entire book about your life when you are only 18 years old. I've already been thro…

Movement of knowledge
Medical knowledge is always in motion. It moves from the lab to the office, from a press release to a patient, from an academic journal to a civil servant's desk and then on to a policymaker.Knowledge is deconstructed, reconstructed, and transformed as it moves. The dynamic, ever-evolving nature of medical knowledge has given rise to different concepts to explain it: diffusion, translation, circulation, transit, co-production.At the same time, its …
Rape in the news
This article deals with narratives of rape in Swedish newspapers between 1990 and 2015. Though perpetuating myths and stereotypes about rape, rapists and rape victims, the main argument is that the narratives of rape in the news are diverse. This diversity is analysed in terms of different genres—narratives of “the lonely pervert”; “the sex slavery rape”; “the celebrity rape”; and “the suburb rape.” Genre will be used as a cultural analytical mea…

Arbetslivsetnologi Professioner i nyliberala organisationer
During the entire 20th century, interest in work and work life as a cultural phenomenon was central to the development of Ethnology as an academic discipline: from an interest in the work and tools of peasant communities, to extensive research on different occupational cultures, including working class ones, to a focus on the processes of professionalization and on policy changes that have an impact on working life. However, with labor market cha…
Evidensbaserad barndiabetesvård i brytpunkten mellan ansvarslogik och egenvårdslogik
Since the early 1990s more social sectors, including the health care sector, have been met by requirements to make their professional practices evidence-based. In 2013–2014, the evidence-based care model Hospital-based Home Care for children newly diagnosed with diabetes was implemented at a large paediatric diabetes care facility in Sweden. The first step of the implementation was to promote readiness for change among the professionals through r…

A Legitimate or an Illegitimate Problem? How School Nurses Establish a Logic of Distinctions Among Children Who Are Overweight or Suffer From Obesity
Overweight and obesity among children has gained increased attention as one of the most unequally distributed health problems. This article draws on interviews with school nurses, who in their daily work handle this problem. Their responses articulate a discrepancy between the general view on overweight and obesity as a “disaster” for the afflicted children and the practice of turning “a blind eye” to specific cases. The aim is to examine how the…
Att analysera sanningens rörlighet
This article argues that Ethnology has an important research task in studying the changeability of Facts in terms of cultural processes, specifically to pose the questions who, where, how and why in relation to a certain area of knowledge. A fruitful way to do so, the author maintains, would be an analytical approach, combining discourse theory and sociological concepts with inspiration from Laclau and Mouffe, as well as Bourdieu. By exemplifying…
