To travel or not? Developing the distinct construct of travel avoidance
In cascading global crises, many individuals are abstaining from travel on purpose. This paper theorizes travel avoidance as a rising behavioral phenomenon and demonstrates its distinctiveness from the lack of intention to travel. We revisit previous studies to streamline the conceptualization of travel avoidance and establish that it can be driven by various external factors perceived as potential harm or threat. Furthermore, we develop a Travel…
Design-Mediated Morality
Art and artisanal objects carry the potential for moral transformations. Although consumer research suggests a relationship between aesthetic taste and morality, scholars have not deeply considered the role of material design in shaping consumers’ moral self. We address this missing link by theorizing the formative process of design-mediated morality: defined as the transmission of moral values into design objects through manifestos and design sc…
Tracking cruise passengers' consumption
This paper analyzes the relationships between the spatial behaviour and destination expenditures of cruise tourists by integrating customer surveys and GPS tracking technology. Based on data collated in 2018 and 2019 in Copenhagen, cruise passenger expenditure was modelled via logistic regression, using socio-demographic characteristics and mobility-related variables. In order to map the spatial behaviour and the key characteristics of the itiner…
Travel-at-home
This study introduces the evolutionary concept of assortative sociality and explores how it moderates pandemic anxiety effects on attitudes towards tourism and travel decisions. Based on a large-scale online survey (N = 4630) conducted in three European countries, we demonstrate that COVID-19 anxiety triggered assortative sociality, which reflects both xenophobic and ethnocentric traits. This changes perceptions of domestic and international trav…

The Covid-19 crisis as an opportunity for escaping the unsustainable global tourism path
The COVID-19 pandemic has halted mobility globally on an unprecedented scale, causing the neoliberal market mechanisms of global tourism to be severely disrupted. In turn, this situation is leading to the decline of certain mainstream business formats and, simultaneously, the emergence of others. Based on a review of recent crisis recovery processes, the tourism sector is likely to rebound from this sudden market shock, primarily because of vario…
The Routledge Handbook of Popular Culture and Tourism
Films contribute to our knowledge of spaces and the cultures reflected in them, thus forming an image of the destination shown in the film. The chapter investigates how culinary films influence tourism flow in the places where they were filmed. Throughout the chapter, a content analysis of films and destination websites has been conducted. The chapter focuses on two messages: the message delivered through the selected movies and the one transferr…
Transformations in destination texture
This article takes heterogeographical approaches to understand Bollywood-induced destination transformations in Switzerland. Positioned within the theoretical field of mediatized mobility, the study contextualizes Bollywood-induced tourism in Europe the concept of texture. Textural analysis (based on Lefebvre’s trialectics of space) combines the analysis of material performances and communicative representations converging in the production/consu…
Collaborative Economy and Tourism
House swapping, ridesharing, voluntourism, couchsurfing, dinner hosting and similar innovations epitomize the collaborative economy. The rise of the collaborative economy, also known as collaborative consumption, the sharing economy and peer-to-peer consumption, has been fueled by a range of social, economic and technological factors including a shift away from ownership towards temporary access to goods; the use of technology mediated transactio…
Staging interrail mobilities
This article applies the multiscalar ‘staging mobilities’ framework from the emergent subfield of mobilities design to analyse an enduring European rail travel phenomenon, interrail. This discussion extends and contributes to tourism mobilities research. Second, the article enriches previous studies of rail travel, by exploring how interrail travel is embedded in, and (im)mobilised by socio-material environments and institutional design decisions…

Tourism Social Media
This volume addresses the transformative power of tourism social media and offers novel theoretical and methodological approaches to its academic investigation. Acknowledging the collective value creation mechanisms of new media, the authors explore how technology nurtures, augments and modifies social or commercial interactions in tourism. The book emphasizes the role of fantasy and imagination in fluid tourism experiences and critically scrutin…
