Mothers Time
Depression and anxiety symptoms are associated with increased unmet need for family planning (FP) postpartum, yet solutions promoting the integration of mental health into FP service settings remain scarce. The aims of this study were to quantitatively examine the immediate and longer term effects of participation in a group‐based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention called Mothers Time on (1) symptoms of depression and anxiety, (2) th…
Socio-economic Correlates of Marital Status and Marriage Timing Among Adult Men in Nigeria
There is a gradual tendency towards prolonged bachelorhood among men in Nigeria. Studies have linked this to socio-economic factors, but this evidence is sparsely explored in the context of Nigeria. Hence, this study fills the knowledge gap. The 2016/17 Nigeria Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey data of 7803 adult men (aged 18-34 years) was analysed by using descriptive and fitting binary logitic regression and Cox regression models. Results show …

Trends in handwashing behaviours for Covid-19 prevention
Handwashing is essential for respiratory virus prevention, but uptake of handwashing in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic remains under-explored. This study examines trends in and determinants of handwashing practices for COVID-19 prevention in 10 countries in West, East, and Southern Africa. Data are derived from an online global Facebook survey assessing COVID-19 knowledge, attitudes, and practices, fielded in July (Round 1) and November 2…
The role of ideation on the effect of an SBC intervention on consistent bed net use among caregivers of children under 5 years in Nigeria
Access to a bed net is a critical first step in the process of bed net utilization. However, psychosocial factors e.g., emotional, cognitive, and social domains of ideation also play a major role in bed net use. Mass media SBC interventions could potentially influence bed net related ideation and consequently improve net use behavior. Future Social and behavior change interventions should employ approaches that improve these domains of ideation w…

Associations between ideational variables and bed net use in Madagascar, Mali, and Nigeria
This research suggests that the systematic use of this model to identify relevant ideational variables in a particular setting can guide the development of communication strategies and messaging, thereby improving the effectiveness of malaria prevention and control
Factors explaining the North-South differentials in contraceptive use in Nigeria
Northern Nigeria has some of the worst reproductive health indicators worldwide. Conspicuous Northâ South variations exist in contraceptive use; not much is known about the drivers of contraceptive use disparities in the North compared to the South
Factors affecting the achievement of fertility intentions in urban Nigeria
A comprehensive strategy to help women avoid unwanted pregnancies should include efforts to increase women's understanding about effective ways to prevent unplanned pregnancies and strengthen self-efficacy for contraceptive use. Promoting spousal communication about reproductive issues, engaging men, promoting smaller family sizes and changing pronatalist attitudes should also be part of such a strategy
Trends in the completeness of birth registration in Nigeria
Nigeria is a signatory to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which identifies birth registration as a childâ s right. However, it is unclear how much progress has been made toward attaining universal birth registration in the country
Perceptions About Survivors of Sexual Violence in Eastern Drc
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has one of the largest concentrations of people who have experienced sexual violence in the world. In this article, we use qualitative data to contrast community reactions toward survivors (descriptive norms) with perceptions about what would constitute justice for survivors (prescribed norms). There are noticeable disparities between descriptive norms and prescribed norms regarding community reactions towar…
Ideation and intention to use contraceptives in Kenya and Nigeria
BACKGROUND: Contraceptive use remains low to moderate in most African countries. Ideation or the ideas and views that people hold has been advanced as a possible explanation for differences in contraceptive use within and across countries. OBJECTIVES: In this paper, we sought to identify the relevant dimensions of ideation and assessed how these dimensions relate to contraceptive use intentions in two illustrative countries - Kenya and Nigeria. M…
The changing cultural and economic dynamics of polygyny and concurrent sexual partnerships in Iringa, Tanzania
Polygyny has been identified both as a 'benign' form of concurrency and as the cultural basis of concurrent partnerships that are considered important drivers of the HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. This paper investigates the changing cultural and economic dynamics of polygyny in concurrency in Iringa, Tanzania, a region with traditions of polygyny and high prevalence of HIV. Our analysis of focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and ke…
Community perspectives on parental influence on engagement in multiple concurrent sexual partnerships among youth in Tanzania
Although concurrent sexual partnerships (CPs) have been hypothesized to be an important risk factor for HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, the social and cultural factors that encourage CPs are not well understood. This study explored the community's perspectives on the role that parents can play in influencing their children's decision to engage in CPs. We conducted 16 in-depth interviews, 32 focus group discussions, and 16 key informant interviews with…
Predictors of parent–child communication among a nationally representative sample in Nigeria
This study explores what constructs are associated with parent-adolescent communication about AIDS/sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and sexual relationships in Nigeria. The analyses use data from the 2007 National HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Health Survey on 2593 men and women who had at least one child over the age of 12 years. The respondents were classified as low, medium, or high communicators. Low communicators were parents who did not t…

The data were derived from demographic and health surveys or AIDS indicator surveys conducted between 2004 and 2009. The levels of HIV prevalence among adolescents varied considerably…
Determinants of use of maternal health services in Nigeria - looking beyond individual and household factors
BACKGROUND: Utilization of maternal health services is associated with improved maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Considering global and national interests in the Millennium Development Goal and Nigeria's high level of maternal mortality, understanding the factors affecting maternal health use is crucial. Studies on the use of maternal care services have largely overlooked community and other contextual factors. This study examined the deter…
New Methods for Estimating the Impact of Health Communication Programs
This paper demonstrates four analytical methods for evaluating the impact of full-coverage communication programs with cross-sectional survey data: propensity score matching (PSM), sensitivity analysis, biprobit regression, and triprobit regression. PSM adjusts for measured covariates and assumes that unmeasured covariates can be ignored; sensitivity analysis helps to test the validity of the assumption that unmeasured covariates are ignorable. B…

The Effects of a Communication Program on Contraceptive Ideation and Use Among Young Women in Northern Nigeria
This study assesses the effects of a communication campaign designed to encourage young people in northern Nigeria to use modern family planning methods to avoid unwanted pregnancies. The analyses are based on a sample of 819 sexually experienced women. Using multivariate probit regression, we attempt to correct for possible endogeneity among campaign exposure, contraceptive ideation, and contraceptive use. Our analysis reveals that the direct ef…

The correlates of safe sex practices among Rwandan youth
This paper presents the results of a 2001 sample survey and uses an ideation model to identify the factors affecting primary sexual abstinence and condom use among Rwandan youth. The findings showed that urban residence and age negatively influence primary sexual abstinence and positively affect condom use. Living within the same household as the father tends to protect girls from early sexual experimentation but has no noticeable effect on boys.…
