Reducing Racial Disparities in Stroke Thrombolysis Using Fairness-Aware Machine Learning
Racial and ethnic disparities in the administration of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remain persistent, raising concerns that bias—both systemic and algorithmic—may influence treatment decisions. While the NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) is intended as an objective tool for assessing stroke severity, its application may not be uniform across patient groups. Using differential item functioning (DIF) analysis on a national…
Population Attributable Fraction for Cognitive Impairment in Mexican American Older Adults
Low educational attainment and cardiovascular comorbidities greatly contribute to cases of MCI and AD/ADRD among Mexican American adults
Exploring Pathways to Caregiver Health
Objectives This study examines the associations of ethnicity, caregiver burden, familism, and physical and mental health among Mexican Americans (MAs) and non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs). Methods We recruited adults 65+ years with possible cognitive impairment (using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment score<26), and their caregivers living in Nueces County, Texas. We used weighted path analysis to test effects of ethnicity, familism, and caregiver burd…
Mexican Americans agree to participate in longitudinal clinical research more than non-Hispanic whites
MAs were persistently more likely to participate in a population-based stroke study in a predominantly MA community despite limited outreach efforts towards MAs during study enrollment. This finding holds hope for future research studies to be inclusive of the MA population
Process Evaluation of a Faith-Based Multicomponent Behavioral Intervention to Reduce Stroke Risk in Mexican Americans in a Catholic Church Setting
Housing status, mortgage debt and financial burden as barriers to health among older adults in the U.S
We examine relations between housing status, mortgage, financial burden, and healthy aging among older U.S. adults. We combine cross-sectional data from 2012 to 2014 Health and Retirement Study cohorts. Using regression models, we examined associations between owners and renters, mortgage and non-mortgage holders, financial strain, and difficulty paying bills, and poor self-rated health (SRH), heart condition (HC) and hospitalization (past two ye…
