The Hes at Fifty
In what follows, I use stylized facts derived from my own professional career as a member of the History of Economics Society (HES) and the history of economics (HE) community to document and illustrate the changing context of the subdiscipline over the past three decades. 1 In the 1990s, the subdiscipline was comprised of a number of national communities. Among the latter the North American community held a dominant position and was quite differ…

Les femmes économistes
This article discusses the participation of women in the development of eighteenth-century French political economy and, more specifically, their role in the network of a prominent group of French economic authors of this period, known as the physiocrats. Our argument is that women played a significant, if seldom visible, role in the creation and dissemination of the ‘new science’ of physiocratic political economy. First, they acted as cultural m…
Laurent Feller and Agnès Gramain, L’évident et l’invisible.
The book is a follow-up of an extremely interesting project organized through a series of workshops that took place mostly at the Université of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne from August 2014 to June 2016. They involved PhD students at the time of the seminars and their advisers, to which a few senior researchers were added. The result is a rich volume made of a general introduction, a general conclusion and 3 parts, totaling 15 essays of different le…
A Note on the Early Versions of the Tableau économique
This article uses materials that have been recently discovered as well as completely new documents, in particular a previously missing copy of the first printed edition of the Tableau économique that the authors found in the French National Archives and that they reproduce here in the appendix of the article. The authors combine these new sources of information with a close reading of materials—in particular the two letters sent by Quesnay to Mir…
The Marquis de Mirabeau and Cantillon's Essai sur la nature du commerce en général
This article presents a detailed chronology of the creation of L'Ami des hommes and the very special role played by Richard Cantillon's Essai sur la nature du commerce en général in this process. It shows that Mirabeau obtained the manuscript of the French translation of the Essai made by Cantillon himself through a marquis de Saint-George. It provides a biography of this obscure character and discusses his relationship with both Cantillon and th…
Exploring the transformation of French trade in the long eighteenth century (1713–1823)
The TOFLIT18 project documents French bilateral international trade flows from the 1710s to the 1820s. This article presents the TOFLIT18 dataset and its exploration tool (the “datascape”). We make four contributions: first, we discuss the institutional framework in which the sources were produced; second, we present our method to standardize the collected data and reduce the variety of commodity names, partners, and measurement units; third, we …
"Seeking the "museum of the future
Using as case studies the initiatives developed by two museum curators, the Belgian bibliographer Paul Otlet (1868-1944) and the Austrian social scientist Otto Neurath (1882-1945), and their subsequent collaboration with an extended network of scientists, philanthropists, artists, and social activists, this article provides a portrait of the general movement toward the creation of a new form of museum: the "museum of the future," as Neurath label…

Economics for the Masses
The rise of visual representation in textbooks is an important feature of the development of the economics discipline after World War II. We argue that it was preceded by a no less significant rise of visual representation in the larger literature devoted to social and scientific issues. During the interwar period, editors, propagandists, and social scientists encouraged the use of visual language as an important means of spreading information an…
The Colonial Machine Dismantled
For nearly two decades, historians have been exploring with an ever-increasing intensity the connection between colonialism and the production of knowledge. This tendency has enriched our understanding of all periods from the early modern to the contemporary and has shed much needed light on the relationship between the growth of a capitalist world economy, colonial expansion, state formation and the development of modern scientific inquiry.1 Mor…
The Economist as Surveyor
In this article, we show that Quesnay, while himself devoted to a major analytical effort to create what was at the time, like today, assessed as an original and far-reaching social theory, was also very much concerned with the development of a systematic empirical inquiry of French economy and society. Our claim is that this program of observation was for Quesnay and the physiocrats no less important than their theoretical investigation. The res…
From Versailles to Paris
This article investigates the scientific practices-and their transformations across time-of the physiocrats in relation to their social background. Our contention is that, in this regard, the physiocratic movement can be broken down in two successive creative communities: The writing workshop of Quesnay (ca.1756-ca.1764) and the physiocratic school (ca.1764-ca.1777). This transformation is related to the specific places and cultural spaces in whi…
Anglo-Saxon vs Continental Scholarship
In an article recently published in this journal, Giancarlo de Vivo (2007) discusses the recent publication of Quesnay's writings that we edited (INED, 2005). We were shocked by his often scornful comments on our work and the several mistakes and misunderstandings on which he based his judgement. Moreover, we wish to point out that, on several occasions, he should have read more thoroughly what he described as an edition “characterized by lazines…
The Writing Workshop of François Quesnay and the Making of Physiocracy
Using archival materials, we investigate the scientific practices of François Quesnay and the individuals who worked with him in relation to their social background. Our contention is that, before 1764, the group of authors who shared Quesnay's commitment to an agrarian economic theory are best described as the "writing workshop" of François Quesnay rather than as the "physiocratic" school. Quesnay organized and supervised the work of these indiv…

From the Encyclopédie to the Tableau économique
This paper investigates the evolution of Quesnay's economic thought between his Encyclopedie articles and the first edition of the Tableau economique. The rediscovery of a forgotten piece Quesnay included in an agricultural treatise — the Essai sur l'amelioration des terres — leads us to reconsider the origins of the first edition of the Tableau. This forgotten piece of writing is the missing link between Quesnay's first economic writings and the…
The visual history of the Tableau Économique
This article looks at the history of the Tableau Economique from a visual point of view. It shows that Quesnay invented the Tableau to formalize visually his economic theory, and that he used different versions of the Tableau ('Zigzag', 'Precis' and 'Formule') for reasons of visual rhetorics. Accordingly, the visual history of the Tableau clarifies several problems identified by previous 'ecommentors'. The paper concludes that the history of the …
