Stigmatizing attributions about mental illness
Work and housing opportunities of persons with psychosis, substance abuse disorder, and other mental illnesses are significantly hampered by societal stigma. The Rhetoric of Racism in Sport
This article provides a sociorhetorical analysis of the April 25, 1989, NBC telecast of “Black Athletes—Fact and Fiction.” It applies Toulmin’s (1958) model of the structure of argumentation to identify the major claims, data, and warrants Tom Brokaw used to construct the program and argues that a racist rhetorical structure resulted. About a century after its British origins, muscular Christianity was revived by American Protestant fundamentalists as they recovered from the religious depression of the 1920s-1930s. In their roles of reality mediator and expert interpreter, sport journalists invoke the term 'instinct' to explain successful athletic performances. This study of journalistic uses of instinct (N = 41) identifies three elements-ability, experience, and cognition-which comprise instinct.
