  • Preventing Epidemics at the Borders

Open Access•Yannis Gonatidis, Maria Pappa et al.•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•2025

The paper traces the evolution of the public health measures taken by the Greek state for its protection from the spread of epidemic diseases, particularly plague and cholera, from abroad, and the development of the network of health authorities during the nineteenth century. In the article, use is made for the first time of the whole of the public health legislation of the Greek state during the period 1821-1909 (more than 1,700 laws, decrees, a…

  • Coastal changes and human occupation in the eastern part of Thessaloniki Bay

    Open Access•Jakub Niebieszczański, Iwona Hildebrandt-Radke et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2023•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

The Holocene marine transgression in the Aegean Sea area has significantly impacted prehistoric societies. Toumba Gona is a tell site located at the mouth of the Anthemous River, east of Thessaloniki Bay. According to earlier research, the site should be dated at most to the late stage of the Early Bronze Age. Geoarchaeological research by means of electrical resistivity tomography, vibra‐coring, sedimentological analysis, and radiocarbon dating …

  • Smart Eye

Open Access•Kalliopi Efkleidou, Dimitrios Kaimaris et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Computer Applications…•2022

The Smart Eye Application is an augmented reality app for mobile devices that enables the in-situ 3D visualization of underground and inaccessible to the public archaeological sites and monuments. Accessibility to excavated archaeological sites and monuments is often hindered for reasons of preservation or urban development. Portable finds are transferred and, in some cases, exhibited in local museums, but the non-portable remains of ancient stru…

  • Exploring Diversity in Neolithic Agropastoral Management in Mainland Greece Using Stable Isotope Analysis

Petra Vaiglova, John Coleman et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2021•Citada por: 4•Referências: 26

New stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope values of charred plant and bone collagen remains from 6th mill. BCE Halai, central Greece, together with datasets from 6th mill. BCE Kouphovouno, southern Greece, and later 6th/early 5th mill. BCE Makriyalos, northern Greece, demonstrate how early farming communities in mainland Greece adapted mixed farming strategies to distinct local environmental and cultural settings. Intra-site similariti…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of the Neolithic Settlement at Makriyalos, Pieria, North Greece

    Open Access•Yannis Maniatis, Maria Pappa•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2020•Referências: 10

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating was performed on samples from the prehistoric settlement at Makriyalos, northern Greece, a “flat extended” (rather than tell) site. Two separate occupation phases, Makriyalos I and II, were clearly distinguished on different sides of a low hill and belonged to the Late Neolithic I and II periods, respectively. Individual phases related to the use of circuit ditches and borrow pits were also recognized and dated. Phase m…

  • Geoarchaeological evidence of landscape transformations at the Neolithic and Bronze Age settlement of Nea Raedestos in the Anthemous River valley, central Macedonia, Greece

    Open Access•Jakub Niebieszczański, Iwona Hildebrandt-Radke et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

A paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the landscape of Nea Raedestos Toumba in the Anthemous River valley in central Macedonia, Greece is undertaken using multidisciplinary geoarchaeological methods. The archaeological site is a settlement mound (tell or toumba) that dates to the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. The tell’s location on the alluvial plain prompted a multidisciplinary investigation to reconstruct the influence of landscape chan…

  • The rescue excavation project at the Neolithic settlement of Vasilika Kyparissi in central Macedonia, Greece

  • Tracing the source of Late Neolithic Spondylus shell ornaments by stable isotope geochemistry and cathodoluminescence microscopy

    Open Access•Bernadett Bajnóczi, Gabriella Schöll-Barna et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2012•Citada por: 19•Referências: 2

  • The Neolithic Settlement at Makriyalos, Northern Greece

Maria Pappa, Μαρία Παππά et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1999•Citada por: 2•Referências: 6

The discovery and excavation of an extensive Neolithic site near the modern village of Makriyalos, in Pieria, northern Greece, have greatly enriched our knowledge of this distinctive, flat-lying, “non-tell” type of settlement. Such sites, spread over a sizeable expanse of land, and not restricted to a single, cumulative locus, have been recently recognized as dominant in Neolithic Macedonia. The site at Makriyalos is located on the gentle slopes o…
