Open Access•David Berikashvili, Nino Tavartkiladze et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Environments and Humans•2025

This paper presents the results of multidisciplinary research carried out at the Samshvilde Archaeological Complex (Georgia, South Caucasus) between 2016 and 2024 by a team from the University of Georgia, the Georgian National Museum, and Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. The project aimed to help reconstruction of the aspects of paleoecology, paleodiet, paleopathology, social hierarchy, and medical practices among Late Bronze–Iron Ag…

Open Access•Guram Chkhatarashvili, Giorgi Tavamaishvili et al.•ARTICLE•STUDIA ANTIQUA ET ARCHAEOLOGICA•2025

Khutsubani is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the Kintrishi Gorge, offering crucial insights into the mobility of people inhabiting Ajara (Western Georgia) during the Early Holocene period. The site provides valuable information on the paleoenvironment, activities, stone processing techniques, and connections with the Middle East. In 2024, an expedition from the Kobuleti Museum conducted extensive archaeological fieldwork at th…

  • Results of a palynological study of the contents of small glass bottles of the Late Antiquity from the Kanchaani Cemetery (Southeastern Georgia)

    Open Access•Eliso Kvavadze, Inga Martkoplishvili et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2023•Referências: 53

Eight small glass bottles (vials) have been obtained from five graves of the Kanchaani cemetery, dating to the 1st-3rd centuries AD. The objects came to the laboratory almost intact, and their contents have also survived. Analysis of the plant pollen and the study of non-pollen palynomorphs (NPP) of these contents showed that there was a set of various medicinal plants in seven bottles, and one bottle contained an infusion made from in-sects, whi…

  • Between Valleys and Mountains. The Dzedzvebi Plateau as an Intermediate Settlement Site of Late Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age Communities in the Lesser Caucasus

    Open Access•Thomas Stöllner, Irina Gambashidze et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Austriaca•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 6

The question of how societies have appropriated the resource-rich montane landscapes of the South Caucasus since the 5th millennium BCE and in which temporal rhythms this development took place is linked with regional mobility as well as the social and economic negotiation of the participating communities. Intermontane settle- ment areas like the large Dzedzvebi Plateau near Kazreti in south- east Georgia probably played an important role as inte…

  • Palynology as an important tool for the reconstruction of diet, diseases and folk medicine of the population of the Classical Period settlement Namcheduri II (western Georgia)

    Open Access•Eliso Kvavadze, Maia Chichinadze et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2022•Referências: 53

Layers of the Namcheduri II settlement (Western Georgia) dated from the 5th-4th centuries BC have been studied by the palynological method. It revealed that cereals represented the main component of the population’s diet in the discussed period. The nutritive ratio included chestnut, hazel, walnut, and grapes. The majority of the plants apparently used for medical purposes represent medicinal remedies against rheumatism, arthritis, and diarrhea. …

  • Late Islamic water collection systems on Failaka Island

Open Access•Jimsher Chkhvimiani, Vazha Mamiashvili et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2021•Citada por: 1

Archaeological investigations on Failaka Island, conducted by the Kuwait–Georgian Archeological Mission, have recorded a variety of sites dating from different time periods, from the Bronze Age to the late Islamic/modern period. The largest proportion of recorded sites consist of late Islamic seasonal settlement structures found in the north‐eastern part of the island. It is possible that they were connected to fishing and associated activities s…

  • Palynological and Archaeological Evidence for Ritual Use of Wine in the Kura-Araxes Period at Aradetis Orgora (Georgia, Caucasus)

Eliso Kvavadze, Maia Chichinadze et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2019•Citada por: 2•Referências: 32

Pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs from two zoomorphic Kura-Araxes vessels (ca. 3000 b.c.) from Aradetis Orgora suggest they were utilized for the ritual consumption of wine and likely represent the beginning of the enduring tradition of animal-shaped wine-drinking containers in Georgia. This hypothesis is supported by archaeological and geoarchaeological data: they resemble later wine-containing vessels from Georgia and elsewhere and were found …

The study examines the representation of individual taxa in the two sampling media and aims to ascertain the duration of pollen deposition captured by a moss. The latter aim was pursued through the calculation of dissimilarity indexes to assess …

Open Access•Pavel E Tarasov, Thompson Webb Iii et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biogeography•1998

Fossil pollen data supplemented by tree macrofossil records were used to reconstruct the vegetation of the Former Soviet Union and Mongolia at 6000 years. Pollen spectra were assigned to biomes using the plant‐functional‐type method developed by Prentice et al . (1996). Surface pollen data and a modern vegetation map provided a test of the method. This is the first time such a broad‐scale vegetation reconstruction for the greater part of northern…
