Digitization for Cultural Heritage Conservation in Emergencies
The ChemiNova project—funded by the Horizon Europe programme and coordinated by the Universitat de València—demonstrates how digital innovation can transform cultural heritage conservation in the face of increasing climate-related emergencies. Through the integration of technologies such as augmented and mixed reality, AI-based analysis, and 3D modelling, ChemiNova will enable real-time monitoring and risk assessment of monuments, museum collecti…
Non-Invasive Use of Imaging and Portable Spectrometers for On-Site Pigment Identification in Contemporary Watercolors from the Arxiu Valencià del Disseny
Imaging techniques have revolutionized cultural heritage analysis, particularly for objects that cannot be sampled. This study investigated the utilization of spectral imaging for the identification of pigments in artifacts from the Arxiu Valencià del Disseny, in conjunction with other portable spectroscopy techniques such as XRF, Raman, FT-NIR, and FT-MIR. Four early 1930s watercolors were examined using point-wise elemental and molecular spectr…
Recent Investigations on the Unique Maya Wall Paintings from Chajul (Guatemala)
This article presents the results of interdisciplinary research encompassing conservation, archaeological excavations, ethnographic, ethnomusicological and historical studies on the Colonial murals documented in the Ixil Maya residences of Chajul (Guatemala). The Chajul murals are unique for several reasons. First, they were documented in what are now private family homes, whereas most examples of Colonial art in Latin America are found in church…

D Model Acquisition and Image Processing for the Virtual Musealization of the Spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala, Rome
This study was carried out within the project “Roma Hispana. Nuevas tecnologías aplicadas al estudio histórico, la musealización y la puesta en valor de Patrimonio Cultural español en Roma: la spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala” (Universitat de València Spain), which is funded by the Conselleria d’Innovació, Universitats, Ciència i Societat Digital of the Generalitat Valenciana (2020–2021) and authorized by the Sovrintendenza Speciale Archeolog…

New insights into the composition of historical remedies and pharmaceutical formulations
The present paper reports one of the first studies on the identification of natural resins and balsams in modern era drug formulations. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied to investigate the composition of ancient remedies and pharmaceutical formulations coming from the Spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala in Rome, founded at the end of the seventeenth century by the Discalced Carmelites. The obtained results hig…

The Maya wall paintings from Chajul, Guatemala
The recent renovation of a house in Chajul in western Guatemala has revealed an unparalleled set of wall paintings, most probably from the Colonial period (AD 1524-1821). The iconography of the murals combines pre-Columbian elements with imported European components in a domestic rather than a religious setting, making them a unique example of Colonial-period art. Here, the authors present the results of iconographic, chemical and radiocarbon ana…
Polysaccharide remains in Maya mural paintings
A number of monosaccharides characteristic of plant gums were found in paint layers and preparation layers of samples of Maya mural paintings of 10 archaeological sites located in Campeche and Yucatan regions. This finding opens the question about the deliberate use of these organic polymers as additives for improving workability and mechanical properties in the preparation layer mortar and conferring cohesion to the pigments in the paint layer. …
Multi-technical approach for the characterization of polychrome decorative surfaces at Spanish Mission Churches in Nueva Vizcaya (Chihuahua, Mexico)
An interdisciplinary and multi-institutional group of science and art conservation specialists has provided new insight into the painting materials used in the polychrome walls and wooden ceilings in four seventeenth century Spanish colonial churches of Nueva Vizcaya (Chihuahua, Mexico). A multi-analytical study of the decorative surfaces was performed in situ using spectroscopic approaches (XRF, FORS), False Colour Infrared Reflectography – IRFC…

Characterization of color production in Xalla's palace complex, Teotihuacan
A multi-analytical approach was used to characterize color remains from Xalla, a Teotihuacan palace complex (project Teotihuacan, Elite and Government. Excavations in Xalla led by Linda R. Manzanilla). Color samples were obtained from polished lithic instruments and pigment ores. Those samples were analyzed combining microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Our results coincide with previous studies in Teotihuacan, with the chromatic palette dis…
Discovery of indigoid-containing clay pellets from La Blanca
Characterization of prehispanic cosmetics found in a burial of the ancient city of Teotihuacan (Mexico)
Characterization of Maya Blue pigment in pre-classic and classic monumental architecture of the ancient pre-Columbian city of Calakmul (Campeche, Mexico)
Correlation Between Spectral, Sem/Edx and Electrochemical Properties of Maya Blue
Visible spectra, composition from SEM/EDX and solid‐state electrochemical data are correlated for a set of 12 Maya Blue samples from different archaeological sites of Campeche and Yucatán (Mexico). In addition to indigo and dehydroindigo, indirubin and other possibly indigo‐type compounds can be detected in Maya Blue samples. Application of hierarchical cluster analysis techniques allows similarity relationships to be established between samples …
