  • The Limits and Consequences of Population Policy

Kimberly Singer Babiarz, Paul Ma et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2026

Most of China's fertility decline predates the famous One Child Policy — and instead occurred under its predecessor, the Wan Xi Shao, or Later, Longer, Fewer (LLF) campaign. Studying LLF's contribution to fertility and sex selection behavior, we find that LLF i) reduced China's total fertility rate by 0.95 births per woman (explaining 30.6% of its fertility decline), ii) doubled the use of male-biased fertility stopping rules, and iii) promoted p…

  • An exploration of China's mortality decline under Mao

Kimberly Singer Babiarz, Karen Eggleston et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•2015•Citada por: 6•Referências: 61

Between 1950 and 1980, China experienced the most rapid sustained increase in life expectancy of any population in documented global history. We know of no study that has quantitatively assessed the relative importance of the various explanations proposed for this gain in survival. We have created and analysed a new, province-level panel data set spanning the decades between 1950 and 1980 by combining historical information from China's public he…

  • Tuberculosis treatment discontinuation and symptom persistence

Open Access•Kimberly Singer Babiarz, Sze-Chuan Suen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Premature TB treatment discontinuation and symptom persistence is particularly high among individuals who have failed to complete treatment for a prior episode. Strategies to identify and promote treatment completion in this group appear promising. Likewise, effective TB regimens of shortened duration currently in trials may eventually help to achieve higher treatment completion rates
