Authentic allyship
Purpose Drawing on feminist masculinity insights, this paper extends thinking on entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) by investigating how allyship can catalyse inclusivity in gendered EEs. Design/methodology/approach We build an argument for Allies as change agents to de-bias EEs and move them toward greater inclusivity. We engage with extant scholarship on allyship to derive propositions and dimensions of authentic allyship in EEs. An illustrative …
Advancing gender inclusivity
Purpose Drawing on a constructionist-poststructuralist feminist perspective, this paper aims to extend thinking on the evolution of entrepreneurial ecosystems by exploring how gendered entrepreneurial ecosystems can become more inclusive. Design/methodology/approach The paper contends path dependency of entrepreneurial ecosystems, maintains embedded gender bias (and biases against disadvantaged or unconventional entrepreneur groups) and builds an…

A gender‐aware framework for women's entrepreneurship
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to offer a new gender‐aware framework to provide a springboard for furthering a holistic understanding of women's entrepreneurship. Design/methodology/approach The paper builds on an existing framework articulating the “3Ms” (markets, money and management) required for entrepreneurs to launch and grow ventures. Drawing on institutional theory, it is argued that this “3M” framework needs further development and…
Advancing a Framework for Coherent Research on Women's Entrepreneurship
Most would agree that the dramatic growth and participation of women in entrepreneurship and the expanding body of research creates a need for both generic and specific theoretical perspectives and research approaches to better understand this phenomenon. To address this need, we consider issues relevant to advancing a framework for women’s entrepreneurship research. However, it is not our intention to establish some reduced parameters for the st…

Multi-Level Entrepreneurship in the Creative Industries
This paper situates the context for entrepreneurship in the creative industries sector in New Zealand. Setting promotion of the creative industries against an overarching national context of the government's Growth and Innovation Framework, the focus of the paper is the screen production industry, mainly the film industry. Buoyed by The Lord of the Rings –The Return of the King's Oscar success and other acclaim, the industry appears to be surfing…
Managing non-standard work arrangements
Non-standard work lacks the predictability of standard employment arrangements and relationships. As a result, it requires a different approach as workers self-manage their working environment and rhythm. This article explores the self-management and self-policing strategies of a group of skilled and professional non-standard workers in New Zealand. The issues that are related to managing time (including time-off), space and the home-work nexus a…
International Sister-Cities
With the demise of the sharp urban-rural divide as a framework for urban analyses, debates have arisen regarding the utility of the city as a theoretically significant construct. Recently however, the growing emphasis on globalization has brought the analysis of global cities into sharp focus. The countervailing trend emphasizes the significance of "the local." International sister-cities provide a site of analysis which illustrates the global-lo…
The dynamics of New Zealand’s largest street market; the Otara flea market
Attempts to explore the complexities in the operation of the largest and best example of New Zealand’s approximation of street vending known as the Otara Flea Market. Aims to understand the way that less formalized economic activity operates as part of the coping strategies of people in communities caught by the domestic response to changes in the global economy. Uses participant observation to categorize the nature, size and general profile of t…
Towards A Synthesis of Transaction Cost Economics and a Feminist Oriented Network Analysis
This paper suggests the possibility of an interdisciplinary, tripartite merger of transaction cost economics and the concept of embeddedness, with feminist insights. It demonstrates that in isolation, a simple application of transaction cost analysis can offer an adequate explanation of economic activity. The explanatory power of this approach however, is enhanced when complemented by greater recognition of the importance of the social context in…
