The enduring burden of short birth intervals on child survival
Child survival has improved considerably over the past decades in sub-Saharan Africa, yet preventable risk factors such as closely spaced births continue to threaten progress, especially in fragile contexts. This study examines the association between interbirth intervals and under-five survival in Burkina Faso using data from five rounds of Demographic and Health Surveys conducted between 1993 and 2021. The study combines descriptive survival an…
Changes in the use of basic obstetric care in sub-Saharan Africa
BACKGROUND: The widespread mobilisation to improve maternal health over recent decades has led to increased prenatal consultations and assisted deliveries, resulting in a significant reduction in maternal mortality in many sub-Saharan African countries. This paper examines the progress made in basic obstetric care in four sub-Saharan African countries (Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Senegal), and investigates the sources of this progress …
Sharp drop in under-five mortality and associated factors in Burkina Faso from 2010 to 2021
Background: Long maintained above 100 ‰ since the 1960s, under-five mortality rates in Burkina Faso have experienced a significant decline, although the specific sources of change remain difficult to identify. Notably, under-five mortality increased from 187 ‰ in 1993 to 219 ‰ in 1998. Subsequently, a steady decrease was observed, with rates falling to 184 ‰ in 2003, 129 ‰ in 2010, and ultimately reaching 48 ‰ in 2021. Objectives: The aim of this…
Measuring adult mortality from mobile phone surveys in Burkina Faso, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo
In many low and middle-income countries, adult mortality estimates are derived from surveys and censuses conducted through face-to-face interviews. These interviews can be time-intensive and are often impractical during health crises or humanitarian emergencies. The expansion in cellphone ownership and network coverage has created new opportunities for collecting demographic data through mobile phone surveys, but our understanding of selection bi…
The use of mobile phone surveys for rapid mortality monitoring
BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries, death registration remains low, and mortality estimation is heavily based on surveys and censuses conducted through face-to-face interviews. These operations are costly and time-consuming, and are difficult to conduct during health and security crises. Taking advantage of the rapid increase in cell phone network coverage, mobile phone surveys (MPS) have recently started to be used to collect mortal…
Beyond Economics and Culture
Theories of contraception and fertility are currently dominated by economic and cultural arguments. A demographic perspective can usefully expand these theories through "addition," "explication," and "reconciliation." The addition is about drawing attention to salient demographic forces that have previously been underconsidered whether these forces operate at the macro, meso, or microlevels. Explication is about adding explanatory flesh to proxim…
