When Opportunity Fails
Homelessness among Central and Eastern European (CEE) migrant communities is a concern in several Western European countries, including the Netherlands, where migration from other EU countries is often motivated by perceived employment opportunities. This study aimed to better understand the emergence of CEE labour migrants' homelessness. Based on interviews with 42 Polish and Romanian labour migrants, we explored patterns of events and situation…
Tailoring a national smoking cessation support programme in co-creation with (expectant) parents in vulnerable situations
Smoking prevalence and limited access to cessation support contribute to persistent health inequities among (expectant) parents in vulnerable situations. Co-creation may help align smoking cessation support with the lived contexts and needs of this group. This study documents and evaluates the use of co-creation to explore contextual barriers and needs, and to inform adaptations to Smoke-free Parents (SFP), a Dutch telephone-based smoking cessati…
Personalised incentives for supporting tobacco cessation (Persist) among healthcare employees
The effectiveness of financial incentives for smoking cessation can be further enhanced by personalising incentives. We aimed to investigate the effect of personalised incentives on abstinence among health care employees who participated in a group-based smoking cessation training, but prematurely terminated the trial due to recruitment issues. All participants (n = 31; 14% of n = 220 required) underwent group-based smoking cessation training. Ba…
A realist evaluation of the implementation of a national tobacco control programme and policy in India
There is a growing interest in studying and unpacking the implementation of policies and programmes as it provides an opportunity to reduce the policy translation time lag taken for research findings to translate into policies and be implemented and to understand why policies may fail. Realist evaluation is a theory-driven approach that embraces complexity and helps to identify the mechanisms generating the observed policy outcomes in a given con…
Association of exposure to the temporary abstinence campaign ‘Tournée Minérale’ with alcohol consumption among male and female participants
Tax increases as an incentive to quit smoking
Tax increases stimulate people to think about quitting. Thinking about quitting due to an upcoming tax increase was associated with more positive quit intention and serious quit attempts
Please, see me’; Informal and professional support of students with relatives with addiction problems
It is recommended to train educational and healthcare professionals to recognize the support needs of young people with relatives with addiction problems, to help them cope, or to refer them adequately. We also suggest broadening the scope of professional support offered to AFMs, including body-oriented and cultural interventions
How Closing a Street Sex Work Zone Impacts Sex Workers’ Vulnerability
Smokers’ strategies to reduce tobacco spending
The majority reported using strategies to reduce spending or that price played a role in their decision to quit. Reducing consumption was the most reported strategy. Low-income smokers were more likely to reportedly reduce consumption, buy cheaper products, or quit. Price policies have the potential to reduce socioeconomic inequalities in smoking. To discourage price-minimising behaviours, such as switching to cheaper products, reducing price dif…
Challenges and successes in the sustainment of Dutch community-level smoking cessation interventions for residents with a low socioeconomic position
The current study highlights challenges and successes in intervention sustainment for people with a lower socioeconomic position. Lack of structural funding was one of the most challenging aspects for intervention sustainment in which health insurers and policy makers can play an important role. Planning for sustainment from the outset would enable intervention coordinators to consider the abovementioned factors early on. This need not be done al…
Shifting the gaze on implementation
We find significant association between the implementation of tobacco control laws/programs and tobacco use in India. Our findings highlight the potential that policy implementation holds in reducing population-level tobacco use thus drawing attention towards the implementation phase of policies. The findings have implications on prioritising enforcement of specific tobacco control measures such as smokefree laws, modifying COTPA signages to enco…
Understanding the Process of Drug Addiction Recovery Through First-Hand Experiences
Understandings of drug addiction recovery are still being debated. Research on perspectives from first-hand experiences with recovery is rare and often contains short-term experiences in the context of a treatment setting. We aim to gain further understanding of recovery by analyzing autobiographical data from persons in different stages of drug addiction recovery who are not linked to any specific treatment service. We conducted 30 in-depth qual…
How do tobacco control policies work in low-income and middle-income countries? A realist synthesis
BACKGROUND: The burden of tobacco use is disproportionately high in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). There is scarce theorisation on what works with respect to implementation of tobacco control policies in these settings. Given the complex nature of tobacco control policy implementation, diversity in outcomes of widely implemented policies and the defining role of the context, we conducted a realist synthesis to examine tobacco control p…
Students with and Without Relatives with Problematic Substance Use
The aim of this cross-sectional study is (1) to describe the socio-demographic characteristics of students with relatives with problematic substance use and to examine differences between students with and without relatives with problematic substance use in (2) health, (3) substance use and (4) study success. We analyzed these differences in bivariate analyses between 881 (15.6%) students in a Dutch university population with relatives with probl…
Are members of mutual aid groups better equipped for addiction recovery? European cross-sectional study into recovery capital, social networks, and commitment to sobriety
An increasing body of evidence shows that informal mutual aid groups benefit those in addiction recovery. However, attention for mutual aid groups in practice and policy varies internationally and is only recently emerging in continental Europe. Existing evidence is mostly limited to studies of Alcoholics Anonymous groups in the United States. The aim of this cross-sectional study is to examine the relationship between membership of a variety of …
Exploring the gateway hypothesis of e-cigarettes and tobacco
Our study replicated the positive relation between e-cigarette use and tobacco smoking in both directions for adolescents. This may mean that the gateway works in two directions, that e-cigarette and tobacco use share common risk factors, or that both mechanisms apply
Comparing three stages of addiction recovery
Many studies on addiction recovery focus on recovery initiation and short-term outcomes for alcohol addictions. In this study, we examine associations between three recovery stages and recovery markers for persons in drug addiction recovery. Data were collected for a multi-country study (REC-PATH) among 722 individuals living in the UK, the Netherlands, and Belgium, who consider themselves in addiction recovery for a period of three months or mor…
Differences in smokers’ awareness of the health risks of smoking before and after introducing pictorial tobacco health warnings
Introducing PHWs coincided with an increase in smokers' knowledge about the health risks of smoking. Dutch tobacco control policy and campaigns should focus on improving Dutch smokers' awareness of the health risks of smoking even more, especially among low educated smokers
Reasons for (not) participating in a community‐based health promotion program for low‐income multi‐problem households in the Netherlands
People living in low-income multi-problem households may benefit from participation in a community-based health promotion program. Yet, low participation rates are often a problem. It is important to assess reasons for (not) participating to better tailor programs to the needs of this particular at-risk group. Back2Balance is a health promotion program for low-income multi-problem households from Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. We performed qualitati…
Language and stigmatization of individuals with mental health problems or substance addiction in the Netherlands
Persons with mental health problems and/or substance addictions (MHPSA) are stigmatised more than persons with physical conditions. This includes stigmatisation by care professionals. Stigma is considered one of the most important barriers for recovery from these conditions. There is an ongoing debate that use of language can exacerbate or diminish stigmatisation. Therefore, we conducted an experiment examining how four different ways of referrin…
Instrumental Mentoring for Young Adults
Closeness between mentor and mentee is previously defined as an important indicator of relationship quality in youth mentoring, but whether this is the case in instrumental mentoring for young adults remains unclear. This is an exploratory study examining how instrumental mentoring serves young adults in their instrumental needs and how relational closeness develops. We applied a mixed-methods design, using quantitative data from a study of an in…
An Examination of the Role of Mentees’ Social Skills and Relationship Quality in a School‐Based Mentoring Program
Research on youth mentoring highlights the importance of the relationship quality between mentor and mentee; mentoring results in more positive outcomes when the mentee perceives the relationship as satisfying and trustworthy. Research on relationship quality shows that social skills are important for constructing new relationships. However, whereas improved social skills are often one of the main goals of youth mentoring, little is known about t…
I Need to Do This on My Own' Resilience and Self-Reliance in Urban At-Risk Youths
This qualitative study investigates urban at-risk youths’ perspectives on their multiproblem situations and explores their needs for support. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 at-risk youths with varied (externalizing) problems and risk factors. The data analysis was carried out using an inductive thematic approach. Four main themes emerged: desistance from delinquent behavior, need for self-reliance, negative experiences in socia…
How the New European Union’s (Pictorial) Tobacco Health Warnings Influence Quit Attempts and Smoking Cessation
In 2016, the Netherlands was required to introduce new European Union (EU)'s (pictorial) tobacco health warnings. Our objective was to describe the pathways through which the new EU tobacco health warnings may influence quit attempts and smoking cessation among Dutch smokers. Longitudinal data from 2016 and 2017 from the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Netherlands Survey were used. Smokers who participated in both surveys were included ( N = …
Did E-Cigarette Users Notice the New European Union’s E-Cigarette Legislation? Findings from the 2015–2017 International Tobacco Control (ITC) Netherlands Survey
This study examined to what extent e-cigarette users noticed the European Union's new legislation regarding e-cigarettes, and whether this may have influenced perceptions regarding addictiveness and toxicity. Data were obtained from yearly surveys (2015-2017) of the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Netherlands Survey. Descriptive statistics and Generalized Estimating Equations were applied. About a third of the e-cigarette users noticed the te…

Is web interviewing a good alternative to telephone interviewing? Findings from the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Netherlands Survey
Differences between the web and telephone sample were present, but the differences were small and not consistently favourable for either web or telephone interviewing. Our study findings suggested sometimes a better data quality in the web than in the telephone survey. Therefore, web interviewing can be a good alternative to telephone interviewing
Prevalence and predictors of smoking in “smoke-free” bars. Findings from the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Europe Surveys
Effectiveness of the European Union text-only cigarette health warnings
BACKGROUND: The European Commission requires tobacco products sold in the European Union to display standardized text health warnings. This article examines the effectiveness of the text health warnings among daily cigarette smokers in four Member States. METHODS: Data were drawn from nationally representative samples of smokers from the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project surveys in France (2007), Germany (2007), the Netherla…
The influence of newspaper coverage and a media campaign on smokers' support for smoke-free bars and restaurants and on secondhand smoke harm awareness
Media attention on smoke-free legislation can influence smokers' support for the legislation and SHS harm awareness. Tobacco control advocates should aim to establish positive media attention that puts forward the health arguments for the legislation
Predictors of car smoking rules among smokers in France, Germany and the Netherlands
BACKGROUND: As exposure to tobacco smoke pollution (TSP) has been identified as a cause of premature death and disease in non-smokers, and studies have demonstrated that smoking in cars produces high levels of TSP, this study will investigate smokers' rules for smoking in their cars, and predictors of car smoking rules, including potentially modifiable correlates. METHODS: Data were drawn from nationally representative samples of current smokers …
Concern about passive smoking and tobacco control policies in European countries
Smokers in countries with a higher TCS score were more concerned about whether their smoke harms others. Further, support for tobacco control measures is higher in countries that have more of these concerned smokers. Concerns about passive smoking seem central in the implementation of tobacco control measures, stressing the importance of continuing to educate the public about the harm from passive smoking
Trends in socioeconomic inequalities in smoking prevalence, consumption, initiation, and cessation between 2001 and 2008 in the Netherlands. Findings from a national population survey
While inequalities in smoking prevalence were stable among Dutch men, they increased among women, due to widening inequalities in both smoking cessation and initiation. Both components should be addressed in equity-oriented tobacco control policies
Impact of national smoke-free legislation on home smoking bans
The findings suggest that smoke-free legislation does not lead to more smoking in smokers' homes. On the contrary, our findings demonstrate that smoke-free legislation may stimulate smokers to establish total smoking bans in their homes
Does smoke-free legislation and smoking outside bars increase feelings of stigmatization among smokers? Findings from the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Netherlands Survey
Socioeconomic and country variations in cross-border cigarette purchasing as tobacco tax avoidance strategy. Findings from the ITC Europe Surveys
Cross-border cigarette purchasing is more common in European regions bordering countries with lower cigarette prices and is more often reported by smokers with higher education and income. Increasing taxes in countries with lower cigarette prices, and reducing the number of cigarettes that can be legally imported across borders could help to avoid cross-border purchasing

Effectiveness of a national reimbursement policy and accompanying media attention on use of cessation treatment and on smoking cessation
It seems that a national reimbursement policy for smoking cessation treatment that is accompanied by media attention can increase cessation. Our findings suggest that this increase can (partly) be ascribed to the media attention that accompanied the policy implementation
Do smokers support smoke-free laws to help themselves quit smoking? Findings from a longitudinal study
Support for smoke-free laws among smokers correlates with past quit attempts and predicts future quitting. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that some smokers support smoke-free laws because the laws could help them quit smoking
Trends and socioeconomic differences in roll-your-own tobacco use
Effective tobacco tax regulation is needed in the European Union and elsewhere to eliminate or reduce the price advantage of RYO tobacco. Additional health messages are also required to correct the misperception that RYO tobacco is healthier than FM cigarettes
Educational differences in the impact of pictorial cigarette warning labels on smokers
The warning labels implemented in France in 2010 and in the UK in 2008 with pictures on one side of the cigarette package did not succeed in increasing warning salience, but did increase avoidance. The labels did not increase educational inequalities among continuing smokers
Prevalence and reasons for use of electronic cigarettes among smokers
The effect of financial incentives on top of behavioral support on quit rates in tobacco smoking employees
Dutch Trial Register: NTR5657 . First received 27-01-2016
Prevalence of hardcore smoking in the Netherlands between 2001 and 2012
We found no support for the hardening hypothesis in the Netherlands between 2001 and 2012. Instead, the decrease of hardcore smoking among smokers suggests a 'softening' of the smoking population
E-cigarette advertisements, and associations with the use of e-cigarettes and disapproval or quitting of smoking
Barriers and Facilitators for Health Behavior Change among Adults from Multi-Problem Households
Multi-problem households are households with problems on more than one of the following core problem areas: socio-economic problems, psycho-social problems, and problems related to child care. The aim of this study was to examine barriers and facilitators for health behavior change among adults from multi-problem households, as well as to identify ideas for a health promotion program. A qualitative study involving 25 semi-structured interviews wa…
How economic recessions and unemployment affect illegal drug use
BACKGROUND: Economic recessions may influence illegal drug use via different mechanisms, for example increased use due to more psychological distress or decreased use due to lower incomes and purchasing power. This paper reviews the literature on how economic recessions and unemployment affect the use of illegal drugs among adults. METHODS: We conducted a systematic realist literature review, which is an explanatory method that aims to understand…
Support for a point-of-sale cigarette display ban among smokers
Displaying tobacco products at point-of-sale (PoS) has become an important marketing strategy for the tobacco industry. This study was designed to (1) examine how support for a PoS cigarette display ban changed among Dutch smokers between 2010 and 2015 and (2) identify the variables that predict support among smokers for a PoS cigarette display ban. Longitudinal data from six annual survey waves (2010-2015) from the International Tobacco Control …
