Barriers to Gender-Affirming Care, Health Care Services, and Experiences of Health Care Provider Bias Among Transgender People in Nigeria
In the current study, we explored barriers to accessing gender-affirming care among transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people in Nigeria. Between February and September 2021, we conducted focus group discussions with 25 adult TGD individuals residing in Nigeria. We found (1) a lack of trans-competent health care providers, (2) high medical costs, (3) limited access to accurate health information, (4) experiences of transphobia, and (5) a lack o…

The impact of depression and post-traumatic stress symptoms on physical health perceptions and functional impairment among sexual minority men living with HIV with histories of trauma
Mental health symptoms may compromise health-related quality of life (HRQOL), including among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV, who experience high rates of trauma and other stressors. This study sought to examine the relative contributions of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depression symptoms, and biological indices of HIV disease status on HRQOL in this population. Participants were 79 MSM with HIV (49% White; 35…

Stigma, discrimination, and substance use among an urban sample men who have sex with men in Massachusetts
Men who have sex with men (MSM) who have intersecting stigmatized identities or characteristics are differentially at risk for acquiring HIV. However, the relationships between specific identities, discrimination and stigma, and HIV risk behaviors require investigation to develop more effective interventions. Data from Boston’s 2014 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance MSM cycle were used to assess associations between socio-demographics, structu…

Depression and Survival in a 17-Year Longitudinal Study of People With HIV
OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of clinically significant depressive symptoms is three times higher in people living with HIV than in the general population. Although studies have shown that depression predicts worse course with HIV, few have investigated its relationship with mortality, and none have had a 17-year follow-up period and been conducted entirely during the time since the advent of protease inhibitors. METHODS: We followed a diverse sample…
Parental Status, Child Contact, and Well-Being Among Incarcerated Men and Women
Using the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities, we examine the association between parenthood and distress and anger among the currently incarcerated. We show how variations in the parenting experience-such as amount of child contact-influence the mental health of incarcerated parents and how these relationships vary by gender. Our analysis indicates that parents who are incarcerated are significantly more distresse…
