Exploration of Hurtful Events Among Ghanaian Couples
We explored hurtful events Ghanaian couples encounter and evaluated the uniqueness of gender and age differences among 102 couples aged 24 to 73. A prompt questionnaire recorded hurtful events in the couples relationships, and the data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results revealed ten types of hurtful events: (1) active disassociation; (2) passive disassociation; (3) infidelity; (4) disrespect; (5) violence; (6) humiliation; (…
What predicts environmental stewardship (climate intentions) and beliefs about climate change in Ghana
We investigated the predictive role of religious and scientific beliefs on climate attitudes among 286 participants from two communities in southern Ghana. Using structural equation modeling, we examined whether specific religious variables (intrinsic religious orientation, extrinsic religious orientation, and religious conviction) and science variables (interest in gaining science and technology knowledge and belief in science’s benefit to human…
Cognition and belief
Cognitive styles play a significant role in how individuals attend to, process, evaluate, and interpret information. In this study, we assessed the relationship between cognitive styles (specifically rationality and analytic holism), and religious behavior (God consciousness and formal practices) and religious orientation (intrinsic and extrinsic orientation) among 283 participants from two communities in southern Ghana. Using structural equation…
Coping strategies among adolescents and young adults living with HIV/Aids in Accra-Ghana
Participants largely adopted positive coping strategies in managing the disease. Factors that influenced the choice of coping strategies were higher levels of education and the presence of both parents as caregivers. The importance of a good social support structure and pursuing further education needs to be emphasized in counselling adolescents living with HIV as it promotes the choice of positive coping strategies
Emotion regulation strategies and psychological health across cultures
Emotion regulation is important for psychological health and can be achieved by implementing various strategies. How one regulates emotions is critical for maximizing psychological health. Few studies, however, tested the psychological correlates of different emotion regulation strategies across multiple cultures. In a preregistered cross-cultural study ( N = 3,960, 19 countries), conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, we assessed associations b…
Do police experience trauma during routine work? An analysis of work-related potentially traumatic events and expressed trauma in a sample of Ghanaian police officers
Existing research associates police work with stress and mental health challenges due to routine exposure to potentially traumatic incidents. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are under-represented in this literature. In this study, we explored the relationship between work-related potentially traumatic events and expressed trauma symptoms in a sample of 121 Ghanaian police officers. Ninety-seven (97) male and 24 female police officers par…
A Lot of Ghanaians Really Don’t Understand the Work We Do” – Cultural Adaptations and Barriers in Ghanaian Psychotherapy Practice
Formal psychotherapy in Ghana is gaining momentum. Concerns about the over-reliance on Western theories bring the suitability of associated clinical interventions into question for Ghanaian, non-Western clients. We interviewed 27 clinical practitioners (including clinical, counseling, and health psychologists) practicing in an urban setting to explore cultural challenges they faced and to identify cultural adaptations they made in their practice.…
Adverse life experiences and mental health of adolescents in Ghana
Adolescents living in sub-Saharan Africa have increased exposure to adverse life experiences (ALEs). The current study examines gender differences in the prevalence of ALEs, mental health outcomes and association between ALEs and mental health outcomes of school-going adolescents in Ghana, West Africa. A sample of 1,886 adolescents (1,174 females) completed mental health and ALEs self-report measures. A series of descriptive and multiple linear r…
Positive and negative psychosis risk symptoms among adolescents in Ghana
Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) have attracted increased scholarly attention; however, there are limited empirical studies in Africa where environmental risk factors for psychosis such as maltreatment are highly prevalent. The study investigated the prevalence and characteristics of PLEs, as well as the association between PLEs and behavioural maladies among adolescents in Ghana. Data were collected from 553 adolescents (girls = 322, 58.1%) usi…
Sociodemographic correlates of depressive symptoms
The prevalence of symptoms of depression among healthy urban Ghanaian women is high. Older women, those with low education, and unemployed women appear to be at higher risk for depression and therefore should be targeted for interventions. Groups at risk for depression-especially older adults or individuals under economic strain-should be targeted for mood assessment as part of routine medical care
Predicting risk and protective factors of generalized anxiety disorder
In this study, we investigated psychosocial factors associated with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) among adolescents in two socioeconomically and ethnically different communities in Ghana. We examined two objectives; to test the predictors of GAD and to examine differences between the two groups on the predictors of GAD. We studied 300 adolescents aged between 13 and 19 years who responded to a six-scale questionnaire that measured GAD, paren…
Do ethnicity and sex-role ideology influence self-esteem among US and West-African young adults
We explored ethnicity and sex-role ideology influences on self-esteem among young adults contrasting self-report data by university students from West-Africa (n = 144; females = 58.33%) and the United States (n = 57; females = 73.68%). The students (N = 201) completed measures of sex-role ideology and personal and collective self-esteem. Following regression analysis, we found ethnicity differences in self-esteem. US students scored higher than W…
Cost recovery in Ghana
The study aimed to investigate the impact on health care seeking behaviour of the cost-sharing policies introduced in Ghana between 1985 and 1992. Qualitative research techniques were used to investigate the behaviour of patients after the introduction of these policies. Focus group discussions of cohorts of the population and in-depth interviews of health workers and selected opinion leaders were used to collect data from rural and urban health …
