  • A ca. 39,000-year record of vegetation and climate change from the margin of the Namib Sand Sea

    Open Access•Brian M Chase, Arnoud Boom et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2023

This paper presents the first continuous multi-proxy record of climate and vegetation change from the central Namib Desert extending over much of the last ca. 39,000 years. Derived from rock hyrax middens, evidence from stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes, pollen, and microcharcoal reveals significant differences between glacial-age and Holocene climates and vegetation types. Although still arid to semi-arid, conditions during Marine Oxygen Isoto…

  • Late-Holocene fynbos-forest dynamics in Orange Kloof, Table Mountain National Park, South Africa

    Open Access•Sabine Prader, Lindsey Gillson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•Referências: 18

Fynbos and afrotemperate forest exist as alternate stable states in the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa. In parts of Table Mountain National Park, afrotemperate forest has expanded in recent decades. The aim of this project was to explore the drivers of this change and distinguish whether this expansion represents a recovery of forest after previous clearance during the 18th century or is a novel expansion of forest range that resulted from…

  • A 25,000 year record of climate and vegetation change from the southwestern Cape coast, South Africa

    Open Access•Lynne J Quick, Brian M Chase et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

The southwestern Cape of South Africa is a particularly dynamic region in terms of long-term climate change. We analysed fossil pollen from a 25,000 year sediment core taken from a near-coastal wetland at Pearly Beach that revealed that distinct changes in vegetation composition occurred along the southwestern Cape coast. From these changes, considerable variability in temperature and moisture availability are inferred. Consistent with indication…

  • Vegetation and climate change during the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age on the southern Cape coast of South Africa

    Open Access•Nadia Du Plessis, Brian M Chase et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 14

This paper presents continuous, high resolution fossil pollen and microcharcoal records from Bo Langvlei, a lake in the Wilderness Embayment on South Africa’s southern Cape coast. Spanning the past ~1300 years and encompassing the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA; c. AD 950–1250) and the Little Ice Age (LIA; c. AD 1300–1850), these records provide a rare southern African perspective on past temperature, moisture and vegetation change during these mu…

  • Late Quaternary micromammals and the precipitation history of the southern Cape, South Africa

Open Access•J Tyler Faith, Brian M Chase et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

The southern Cape of South Africa is important to understanding regional climate because it straddles the transition between the winter and summer rainfall zones. We examine late Quaternary changes in rainfall seasonality and aridity through analysis of micromammal assemblages from three sites: Boomplaas Cave and Nelson Bay Cave in the aseasonal rainfall zone and Byneskranskop 1 in the winter rainfall zone. Our interpretation is based on analysis…

  • Influence of Agulhas forcing of Holocene climate change in South Africa’s southern Cape

    Open Access•Brian M Chase, Lynne J Quick•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

This paper analyses a series of high-quality continuous records from southeastern Africa to study the spatiotemporal patterning of Holocene hydroclimatic anomalies in the region. Results indicate dominant frequencies of variability at millennial time scales, and a series of anomalies broadly common to all records. Of particular interest, data from the southern Cape coast exhibit periods of wetter/drier conditions that are out of phase with the si…

  • Climatic controls on Later Stone Age human adaptation in Africa's southern Cape

    Open Access•Brian M Chase, J Tyler Faith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2018•Citada por: 21•Referências: 110

  • Variability of 14 C reservoir age and air–sea flux of CO 2 in the Peru–Chile upwelling region during the past 12,000 years

Open Access•Matthieu Carré, Donald Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

The variability of radiocarbon marine reservoir age through time and space limits the accuracy of chronologies in marine paleo-environmental archives. We report here new radiocarbon reservoir ages (ΔR) from the central coast of Chile (~ 32°S) for the Holocene period and compare these values to existing reservoir age reconstructions from southern Peru and northern Chile. Late Holocene ΔR values show little variability from central Chile to Peru. P…

  • Mid to Late Quaternary Landscape and Environmental Dynamics in the Middle Stone Age of Southern South Africa

    Open Access•Andrew S Carr, Brian M Chase et al.•CHAPTER•Africa from MIS 6-2•2016

  • Temperature variability over Africa during the last 2000 years

    Open Access•Sharon E Nicholson, D J Nash et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Citada por: 12•Referências: 6

A growing number of proxy, historical and instrumental data sets are now available from continental Africa through which past variations in temperature can be assessed. This paper, co-authored by members of the PAGES Africa2k Working Group, synthesises published material to produce a record of temperature variability for Africa as a whole spanning the last 2000 years. The paper focuses on temperature variability during the ‘Medieval Climate Anoma…

  • Evidence for progressive Holocene aridification in southern Africa recorded in Namibian hyrax middens

    Open Access•Brian M Chase, Michael E Meadows et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

Presented here are stable nitrogen isotope data from a rock hyrax ( Procavia capensis ) middens from northwestern Namibia that record a series of rapid aridification events beginning at ca. 3800 cal yr BP, and which mark a progressive decrease in regional humidity across the Holocene. Strong correlations exist between this record and other terrestrial and marine archives from southern Africa, indicating that the observed pattern of climate change…
