The age of the Lower Paleolithic occupation at Schöningen
The Assessment of Radionuclide Distribution in Silex by Autoradiography in the Context of Dose Rate Determination for Thermoluminescence Dating
A combination of two autoradiography methods was applied to investigate the radionuclide distribution patterns in a range of different silices. We obtained greyscale images (β‐radiation) and α‐track patterns for qualitative assessment, and used a statistical approach to quantify the degree of uniformity of the radiation fields. It was found that almost all samples are poor in potassium, thorium and uranium, and that locally high concentrations ar…
Timing of the last interglacial in Northern Europe derived from Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating of a terrestrial Saalian–Eemian–Weichselian sedimentary sequence in NE-Germany
Radiometric dating of the type-site for Homo heidelbergensis at Mauer, Germany
The Mauer mandible, holotype of Homo heidelbergensis , was found in 1907 in fluvial sands deposited by the Neckar River 10 km southeast of Heidelberg, Germany. The fossil is an important key to understanding early human occupation of Europe north of the Alps. Given the associated mammal fauna and the geological context, the find layer has been placed in the early Middle Pleistocene, but confirmatory chronometric evidence has hitherto been missing…
On the age of the young morainic morphology in the area ascribed to the maximum extent of the Weichselian glaciation in north-eastern Germany
A New Thermoluminescence Dating Technique for Heated Flint
A new thermoluminescence (TL) technique for determining the age of heated flint artefacts from archaeological sites is presented. It is a variant of the SAR protocol, which is usually used for OSL dating of sediment, but it is not based on a presumed model for fitting the dose–response curve. Dose recovery tests as well as comparisons with standard protocols show the accuracy of the new technique. It is found that the sensitivity of the thermolum…
Dating Archaeometallurgical Slags Using Thermoluminescence
Thermoluminescence has a great potential for dating archaeometallurgical slags, because the smelting process leads to a well‐defined resetting of the ‘luminescence clock’. However, the complex compositions of slags have unpleasant consequences for TL measurements if the bulk slag substance is used. To overcome this problem, quartz has been separated out of slag matrices by chemical and physical procedures. The TL measurements were carried out on …
