Trauma, empowerment, and resilience
Introduction: Canada has endorsed the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) target to end the HIV epidemic by 2030. However, Canada has reported increases in HIV diagnoses for five consecutive years since 2019, with Manitoba's provincial rates three times the national average. This study examines mental health factors that may impact engagement in care among people living with HIV in Manitoba. Methods: For this qualitative study, 32…
Commentary—presentation and reflections on renewing Canada’s public health core competencies
The publication of The Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada, Release 2.0 is the result of 3 years of collaborative efforts and is a rare opportunity to reflect on the transformative processes involved. The updated competencies provide a common language for effective practice and a baseline to fulfill the core functions of public health in Canada. Barriers and recommendations for harm reduction services among people living with HIV in Manitoba, Canada
Introduction: In 2022, the province of Manitoba, Canada, recorded its highest increases in substance-related deaths and new HIV diagnoses. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated access barriers to harm reduction services across the country. Given the intertwined relationship between HIV and injection substance use, we sought to better understand People Living with HIV's (PLHIV) access barriers to harm reduction services, and recommendations for improv…
Community science for mosquito surveillance in Canada
Organizations and public health authorities now have a clear, evidence-based guide to designing, implementing, and evaluating community-driven initiatives. This toolkit not only helps ensure that volunteer participation is meaningful and effective, but it also enhances the capacity to respond to emerging challenges in vector control, laying the groundwork for sustainable, community-driven surveillance efforts
Introduction of short course treatment for latent tuberculosis infection at a primary care facility for refugees in Winnipeg, Canada
Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) End TB strategy document 'Toward tuberculosis elimination: an action framework for low incidence countries'-like Canada- identifies screening and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) for groups at increased risk for TB disease as a priority, including newcomers from endemic countries. In 2015, the clients-centered model offered at a primary care facility for refugees, BridgeCare Clinic,…
Saying it out loud
Introduction: In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic there were numerous stories of health equity work being put "on hold" as public health staff were deployed to the many urgent tasks of responding to the emergency. Losing track of health equity work is not new and relates in part to the need to transfer tacit knowledge to explicit articulation of an organization's commitment to health equity, by encoding the commitment and making it visible…
Impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions and vaccination on Covid-19 outbreaks in Nunavut, Canada
NPIs have been essential in mitigating pandemic outbreaks in this large, geographically distanced and remote territory. While vaccination has the greatest impact to prevent infection and severe outcomes, public health implementation of NPIs play an essential role in the short term before attaining high levels of immunity in the population
Integrated surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial use
Action is needed in 3 crucial areas: i) development of a complete, integrated AMR/AMU surveillance program, based on current success; ii) changes in Federal/Provincial/Territorial policies to require standardized AMR/AMU reporting; and iii) more resources for AMR/AMU surveillance (dedicated persons, funding, and enabling structures and policy). There is an urgent need for prioritization by Federal/Provincial/Territorial governments to address gov…
One Health Evaluation of Antimicrobial Use and Resistance Surveillance
We describe the development, application and utility of our novel, One Health Evaluation of Antimicrobial Use and Resistance Surveillance (OHE-AMURS) tool that we created to evaluate progress toward integrated, One Health surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial use (AMU) as a complex system in Canada. Changes in the incidence of seasonal influenza in response to Covid-19 social distancing measures

The value of program science to optimize knowledge brokering on infectious diseases for public health
The use of scientific knowledge to improve public health program design, implementation and evaluation forms the basis for the program science framework. Providing the right public health information to the right audience at the right time can foster long-term outcomes of networks and new partnerships which can potentially improve delivery of public health services
Pathways Into and Out of Homelessness
Housing insecurity is a major barrier to leaving domestic violence; it may force abused women to live in inadequate conditions or to return to their abusers. Immigrant women face additional barriers. Longitudinal interviews with 37 abused immigrant women living in three Canadian cities investigated key causes of housing insecurity. Results show a need to target systemic factors, a diversity of issues foregrounded along pathways into and out of ho…
