This article provides a brief overview over military action in Roman Britain during the four centuries of Roman rule, taking a closer look at how the Roman army reacted operationally to military threats to Roman rule. Dilectus
The dilectus (“selection”) was the Roman levying of soldiers for military service among the Roman citizenry. It took place on the Capitolium, where the initial mustering took place, and on the Campus Martius, where the new recruits’ weapons were inspected. It was one of the most important duties of the consuls, to whom it fell to preside over it.
