Interactive relationship between alexithymia, psychological distress and posttraumatic stress disorder symptomology across time
Alexithymia, psychological distress, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are highly related constructs. The ongoing debate about the nature and relationship between these constructs is perpetuated by an overreliance on cross-sectional research. We examined the longitudinal interactive relationship between alexithymia, psychological distress, and PTSD. We hypothesised that there is an interactive relationship between the three constructs. Mil…
Longitudinal Relationship Between Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Physical Symptoms in Military Veterans
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the temporal relationship of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and physical symptoms in a non-treatment-seeking deployed military sample. METHODS: Data were from a longitudinal study of Australian Defence Force personnel deployed to the Middle East Area of Operations between 2010 and 2012 ( n = 1871). Predeployment assessment was conducted 4 months before deployment (T1). Of these, 1324 (70.8% ret…
Cross-lagged analyses of anger and PTSD symptoms among veterans in treatment
Anger influences change in specific PTSD symptoms over time among military veterans in treatment and may interfere with treatments for PTSD. Veterans who present to clinical services with anger problems may benefit from anger interventions prior to commencing trauma-focused treatment. The findings have additional implications for conceptual models of the relationship between anger and PTSD. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reser…
The Meanings Soldiers Attach to Health and Their Impacts on Primary Health-Care Utilization and Avoidance in an Australian High-Risk Combat Unit
It is widely accepted many health and mental health conditions experienced by veterans may be prevented or reduced in severity through early primary health-care intervention, yet research suggests high levels of health-care avoidance in this population. The aim of this study was to examine the meanings military personnel attached to health and how these impacted health-care utilization. To achieve this, 50 hours of primary interview data were obt…
An Open Label Pilot Study of a Brief Psychosocial Intervention for Disaster and Trauma Survivors
This study provides preliminary evidence that the delivery of the SOLAR program after disaster by trained, frontline workers with little or no mental health experience is feasible, acceptable, safe, and beneficial in reducing psychological symptoms and impairment among disaster survivors. Randomized controlled trials of the SOLAR program are required to advance evidence of its efficacy
Impact of Covid-19 on mental health care for Veterans
Symptom attribution and treatment seeking in Australian veterans
To understand the role of symptom attribution in treatment-seeking behaviours, survey results of 1356 veterans (age = 38-72 years) were analysed. Controlling for symptom frequency, significant relationships were found for specialist and psychological-related consultations. Those who favoured psychological explanations for symptoms were more likely to attend specialist and psychology-related consultations and filled significantly more prescription…

The effect of post-traumatic stress disorder on refugees' parenting and their children's mental health
BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents, who account for most of the world's refugees, have an increased prevalence of psychological disorders. The mental health of refugee children is often associated with the severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in their caregivers. Despite the potential for refugee caregivers' PTSD to affect child mental health, little evidence exists concerning the underlying mechanisms of this association. This stu…
Experiences of a prolonged coal-mine fire
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the perspectives of local residents regarding the impact of the long-duration Hazelwood open cut coal mine fire in rural Australia. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative approach was undertaken involving 27 in-depth interviews with adults who lived in the town of Morwell, immediately adjacent to the coal mine fire. Findings Participant concerns focussed upon fear and confusion during the event, …
Post-traumatic stress disorder
A prospective study of rapid breathing and the development of posttraumatic panic disorder
This study tested the theory that rapid breathing at the time of a traumatic event leads to development of panic disorder (PD). Traumatically injured patients (n=1,061) from 4 major trauma hospitals had their respiratory rates (RR) assessed at the scene of traumatic injury, subsequently assessed for lifetime PD, and reassessed 3 months later for PD (n=843). At follow-up, 59 (7%) patients met criteria for new-onset PD. Patients with elevated RR (>…
Exploration of Delayed-Onset Posttraumatic Stress Disorder After Severe Injury
OBJECTIVE: The first aim of this work was to conduct a rigorous longitudinal study to identify rates of delayed-onset posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a sample of patients with severe injury. The second aim was to determine what variables differentiated delayed-onset PTSD from chronic PTSD. METHODS: Randomly selected patients with injury who were admitted to four hospitals around Australia were recruited to the study (N = 834) and assessed…

Lifetime Prevalence of Gender-Based Violence in Women and the Relationship With Mental Disorders and Psychosocial Function
CONTEXT: Intimate partner physical violence, rape, sexual assault, and stalking are pervasive and co-occurring forms of gender-based violence (GBV). An association between these forms of abuse and lifetime mental disorder and psychosocial disability among women needs to be examined. OBJECTIVES: To assess the association of GBV and mental disorder, its severity and comorbidity, and psychosocial functioning among women. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICI…
Predictors of Mental Health Service Utilisation in a Non-Treatment Seeking Epidemiological Sample of Australian Adults
The long-term costs of traumatic stress
One of the greatest challenges to the field of traumatic stress has been the observation that many individuals who coped at the time of their traumatic exposure became unwell at a later date. This observation was particularly challenging in the context of World War I and World War II because the prevailing psycho-pathological theories at the time did not have a clear rationale for this phenomenon and led to considerable stigmatization of disabled…

Post-traumatic stress disorder
Background. We report on the epidemiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Australian community, including information on lifetime exposure to trauma, 12-month prevalence of PTSD, sociodemographic correlates and co-morbidity. Methods. Data were obtained from a stratified sample of 10641 participants as part of the Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Well-being. A modified version of the Composite International Diagnosti…
Personal appraisal of the experience of a depressive disorder
In a prospective study, 61 patients receiving ongoing treatment for Major Depression rated the personal significance of the disorder by using the Personal Appraisal Inventory (PAI) (Bookless, Clayer & McFarlane, 2000) twice over a period of 7 months. The initial (Time 1) association between the individual items of the PAI and self‐reported levels of depression, anxiety, disability, self‐esteem and psychological distress was examined. It was found…
The treatment of post‐traumatic stress disorder
This report reviews treatment studies of post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Much of the literature is descriptive and concentrates on particular treatment modalities without attempting to integrate these different approaches into the wider body of knowledge about PTSD. No study has randomly assigned patients to experimental and control groups. The treatment of 56 patients with PTSD is described, highlighting issues which influence the choice …
