Birth Outcomes Among First Nations Birthing Parents Incarcerated While Pregnant
The findings suggest that incarceration may contribute to intergenerational systems of oppression by compromising birth outcomes among First Nations and other birthing parents in Canada and underscore the need to both improve care for pregnant people who are incarcerated and invest in alternatives to incarceration
Assessing the migrant mortality advantage among foreign-born and interprovincial migrants in Manitoba, Canada
Migrants had a mortality advantage over non-migrants, being stronger for international immigrants than for interprovincial migrants. Among the two migrant groups, there was heterogeneity in the mortality risk according to migrants' characteristics
Adolescent outcomes and opportunities in a Canadian province
Our findings suggest a paradox: Canadian developmental outcomes through late adolescence appear quite similar to those in the United States, even though intergenerational mobility in Canada is closer to mobility in the Nordic countries than to that in the United States
What is Most Important
Short-, Medium-, and Long-Term Consequences of Poor Infant Health
We use administrative data on a sample of births between 1978 and 1985 to investigate the short, medium and long-term consequences of poor infant health. Our findings offer several advances to the existing literature on the effects of early infant health on subsequent health, education, and labor force attachment. First, we use a large sample of both siblings and twins, second we use a variety of measures of infant health, and finally we track ch…

Neighbourhood, Family and Health Care
Canadian Health Reform
We analyze the gender impact of the current Canadian system of first-dollar health insurance by examining the use of physicians' services and acute-care hospital services in the Canadian province of Manitoba from April 1, 1997, to March 31, 1999. First, we describe the use by age and sex of healthcare resources offered with universal access at no cost to individuals. Second, we argue that women have a particular interest in maintaining single-pay…
Potential Savings from Reducing Inequalities in Health
Delivering Equitable Care
Objectives. This study examined preventive care delivered in Manitoba during the 1990s by 3 different methods —childhood immunizations (by physicians and public health nurses under a government program), screening mammography (through a government program introduced in 1995), and cervical cancer screening (no program). Methods. Longitudinal administrative data, an immunization monitoring system, and Canadian census databases were used. Results. C…
Using a Population-based Health Information System to Study Child Health
Being Born in Manitoba
Waiting Times for Surgical Procedures
OBJECTIVES: Polls show that nearly two thirds of Canadians believe that waiting times prior to surgery have increased in recent years. A study was undertaken in Manitoba to determine whether public perceptions about long and increasing waits were valid. RESEARCH DESIGN: Using administrative data, waiting times for 10 types of surgery-ranging from coronary artery bypass surgery and mastectomy to cataract surgery and hernia repairs-were studied ove…
Record Linkage Strategies, Outpatient Procedures, and Administrative Data
By understanding the range of approaches implicit in modern record linkage, epidemiologists and health services researchers can better decide its suitability for their needs. The authors discuss a small record linkage project, providing a sense of where mistakes were made. The research first uses existing identification numbers as a gold standard for linking hospital abstracts and physician claims to investigate whether or not coronary angiograph…
