Growing Appetites and Hungry Subjects
This paper explores the Western philosophical idea of “appetites” through the lens of “addiction.” I begin with a brief ethnographic description of a woman whose subjectivity seems to emerge only in the play of her unmanageable desire for various pharmaceuticals. In other words, she is a self-described “addict.” I then look at the relationships between addicts and the undead, especially vampires and zombies, who are seemingly enslaved to their ap…
Repealing Ireland's Eighth Amendment
In 2018, the Irish public voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment to the Irish Constitution, which since 1983 banned abortion in the country. While this was a watershed moment in Irish history, it was not unconnected to wider discussions now taking place around the world concerning gender, reproductive rights, the future of religion, Church–State relationships, democracy and social movements. During an ethnographic study of barriers to, and compliance with, antiretroviral (ARv) treat- ment in the South Africa’s West Coast region, our team came across a general sense amongst heath careproviders that there was a lively illicit trade in antiretroviral medications. in itself, this is seen to be a barrier to adherence for many of their patients whose medication is traded to, or stolen by, drug dealers. independent anecdotal evidence is eme…
