Hegemony, Resistance, and the Cultural Turn
The theoretical innovations and empirical research of the Contemporary Centre for Cultural Studies in the 1970s, commonly known as the Birmingham School, are reconsidered as a critical sociological approach to culture. Led by Stuart Hall, Birmingham School scholars theorized that the social crisis of their time was ultimately determined by shifts in the political economy of capitalism, but their ethnographic research also illuminated multiple sit…
Resilience Measuring Tools for Risk Assessment & Disaster Preparedness in India
In today's increasingly complex and dynamic environment, the ability to manage environmental risks and seize opportunities for enhanced well-being is paramount for individuals, organizations, and governments. However, translating this concept into practice has proven to be a formidable challenge, primarily due to the absence of robust tools for the comprehensive assessment of resilience and its integration into development initiatives
Race, Relationships, and Trust in Providers among Black Patients with HIV/Aids
A trustful patient-provider relationship is a strong predictor of positive outcomes, including treatment adherence and viral suppression, among patients with HIV/AIDS. Understanding factors that inform this relationship is especially relevant for Black patients, who bear a disproportionate burden of HIV morbidity and mortality, and may face challenges associated with seeing providers of a racial/ethnic background that is different from their own.…

Hegemony, agency, and dialectical tension in Ellul's technological society
Recent writers have questioned hegemony theory as a way of understanding the relationship among the citizen, the media, and the state. In this essay I propose the work of Jacques Ellul for reconceptualizing this relationship. Ellul's focus on a technological state and a mass-mediated society presents a powerful alternative to Gramsci's focus. Ellul argued that the modern state is the product of the invasion of technique throughout society. Such a…
