  • How does it make you feel? Understanding the affordances of the Many Minds psycho-social analytic model in child protection research

Open Access•Eystein Victor Våpenstad, Mari Dalen Herland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Practice•2026

Recently there has been a growing interest in psychosocial research methods based on psychoanalytically-informed clinical practice. This paper reports on the introduction of the Many Minds approach, a research method for analysing research data, to a group of Norwegian academics. Following an account of the historical and theoretical roots of Many Minds, we explore how the research ‘data’, or research ‘story’ as we refer to the material presented…

  • Escape Capital

Open Access•Mari Dalen Herland, Aleksandra Bartoszko•ARTICLE•Journal of Extreme Anthropology•2025

This article provides a novel perspective on the phenomenon of youths running away from Norwegian residential childcare institutions, challenging conventional views that attribute such actions to delinquency or pathology. By adopting an experience-near approach, we explore escapes as demonstrations of creative agency and resilience, rather than mere acts of defiance. Drawing on staff observations and accounts from young residents, the study highl…

  • Institutional escapes, breaks, and continuities

Open Access•Aleksandra Bartoszko, Mari Dalen Herland•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2025•Referências: 13

This article offers a novel approach to understand the phenomenon of running away from residential care institutions, challenging prevailing views that pathologize these incidents as individual deviance. Drawing on insights from the sociology of escape and Deleuze and Guattari’s concepts of rhizome and lines of escape, we examine spatial, temporal, and relational dimensions of institutions, revealing the porous nature of institutional boundaries …

  • The words may limit our understanding

Open Access•Mari Dalen Herland•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Practice•2024

Drawing on a reflexive and embodied approach, this article examines the researcher’s narrative inquiry, consisting of the conflicting feelings and messy thoughts that arose through her interviews with adults who had experienced child sexual abuse. The article highlights how embodied writing can enable access to other worlds by activating the physical senses and bringing researchers back to core bodily ways of knowing; these latter may be evoked b…

  • Understanding the Narratives of Child Sexual Abuse

    Open Access•Mari Dalen Herland•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2024

This qualitative study consisted of in-depth, retrospective interviews with participants over the age of 18 who experienced child sexual abuse. Through narrative analysis, study findings shed light on three overall findings: the perception of memories, the perception of grooming, and the perception of the lived lives of child sexual abuse survivors. Findings suggest that the narratives elicited from the participants included current views but als…

  • The body as a site of knowledge

    Open Access•Mari Dalen Herland•ARTICLE•Qualitative Social Work•2023

Research on child sexual abuse has underacknowledged the multifaced, tacit and embodied dimensions, leaving the literature without a full picture of events that are often unspeakable, especially with regards to disclosure. This study thus placed emphasis on and highlighted the importance of increased awareness around lived lives and bodily narratives of child sexual abuse. The qualitative study consisted of 14 in-depth, retrospective interviews w…

  • Narratives of child sexual abuse—Conceptualizing relational complexities

    Open Access•Mari Dalen Herland•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2023

This qualitative study consisted of 14 in‐depth, retrospective interviews with Norwegian participants over the age of 18 who experienced child sexual abuse. Through narrative analysis, study findings shed light on three analytical ideas: ‘confusing closeness and ambivalent feelings’, ‘relational complexities’ and ‘relationally trapped’. The results illustrate participants' views, feelings and understandings regarding child sexual abuse and their …

    Open Access•Mari Dalen Herland•ARTICLE•Qualitative Social Work•2022

Social workers often experience higher levels of burnout compared with other healthcare professionals. The capacity to manage one’s own emotional reactions efficiently, frequently in complex care settings, is central to the role of social workers. This article highlights the complexity of emotions in social work research and practice by exploring the perspective of emotional intelligence. The article is both theoretical and empirical, based on re…

  • Parents with troubled upbringings and their perception of childhood

    Open Access•Mari Dalen Herland•ARTICLE•Child & Family Social Work•2018•Citada por: 1•Referências: 6

Applying qualitative data from a 30‐year‐long follow‐up study, this article examines how 30 parents with troubled upbringings talk about and present their children through stories about parenthood. Two overall themes were identified: (a) the perception of childhood with the associated subcategories “being engaged in school” and “the value of eating rituals and leisure activities” and (b) having agency with the associated subcategories “being hear…

This paper examines how women who experienced severe adjustment problems during adolescence, and who had troubled childhoods in families with high levels of conflict, construct their self‐conceptions as mothers. Applying data from a 30‐year‐long follow‐up study, this paper examines how participants with troubled upbringings experience social norms of motherhood.
