Challenging the boom-and-bust models? The fourth millennium BC copper mine of Curak in south-west Serbia
Despite an early surge in copper-ore mining during the sixth and fifth millennia BC (the 'boom'), evidence for metal production in the Balkans dwindles in the fourth millennium (the 'bust'). The article deals with the exploitation of raw materials during pre-colonial times in Southern Peru especially pre-Columbian mining and quarrying activities in the valleys of Palpa and Nasca. Above Hallein, 14 km south of Salzburg and at 800 m above sea level, the spa village of Heilbad Dürrnberg clusters around what until recently was a centre of commercial salt production.
