Stratified Public Connections—Beyond the Taste for News
Many scholars have expressed concerns about the well-being of modern societies in the age of digitalisation and datafication, with opaque algorithms on social media supposedly structuring human agency and eroding the foundations of democracy. To address these concerns, I conducted multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) on a rich body of representative survey data on Danish citizens (N = 5660) to examine how citizens connect to and engage within t…
The Power Elite in Greenland
In this research note, we map the power elite in Greenland, amidst the current geopolitical interest in the nation. Using social network analysis, we identify a power elite of 123 individuals as the central circle in an extensive affiliation network data on 3412 positions held by a total 2052 individuals in 456 affiliations. We find an integrated and cohesive power elite dominated by actors from politics and public and private enterprises. When c…

The Digital Community Centers of the 21st Century? A Mixed-Methods Study of Facebook Groups as Fora for Connective Democracy
Facebook groups hold civic potential as fora for connective democracy. Exploring this claim, we offer a contribution to ongoing debates concerning the democratic value of digital communication. Through a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative mapping of approximately 9,000 Danish Facebook groups, netnographic field studies of select groups, and interviews with group moderators, we investigate the groups as 'friendlier spaces' of contempor…
Digital media revolution and stratificational inertia
Protégés of power
Career narratives among the Danish power elite often include the facilitating presence of an elite superior. We explore the role patrons play in the mobility narratives of the Danish power elite. Drawing from a highly select group identified in the core of elite networks, we interviewed 37 individuals selected for maximal variation in career paths, networks and positions within the power elite. We referenced the concept of patrimonialism to under…
Open for business
Within a timespan of a few years, regulatory sandboxes, a novel initiative for testing fintech innovations, have spread to financial conduct authorities across the world. We study the discursive diffusion of this regulatory innovation as evidence of a broader reconfiguration of relations between the financial sector and its regulators. To do so, we analyse media articles, policy documents, and political speeches, identifying the logics and argume…
Stratified Citizens
While there are many ways to understand citizenship in terms of what constituents (should) do, think, feel, and say, there is a felt absence of a perspective that factors in the social reasons for how people enact citizenship and the role of media in enacting such forms of citizenship. Based on a review of key studies of citizenship in audience research and political science, this study introduces a Bourdieusian perspective to examine citizenship…
Researching publics in datafied societies
Datafication has become an all-encompassing infiltrator in societal processes, among other the formation of publics and the actors that support such processes (i.e. journalism and information technologies). This article reviews four approaches to the study of public formation. These are (1) public and civic connections, (2) issue publics, (3) networked publics and (4) algorithmic publics. The review is a point of departure to conceptually discuss…
