Dimensions of occupational inequality and Duncan's socioeconomic index
Interorganizational Influences on Mental Health Diagnoses
In this study, it is hypothesized that mental health diagnoses are influenced by power relations and value conflicts between community mental health centers and the organizations in their catchment areas. A case study of a community mental health center in a large western city provides evidence to confirm this hypothesis. However, these macro-level influences on the diagnostic process are found to be reduced substantially when clients possess oth…
A Specification Issue in Job Satisfaction Research
Prevailing theories of job satisfaction assume that the pursuit of job satisfaction is an important employment goal to workers. The central questions asked here are as follows: (1) Is this assumption tenable? (2) What effects do the violation of this assumption have on the testing of popular models in job satisfaction research? Using data representative of registered nurses in a large metropolitan area, it was found that only about half of the wo…
The Worker-to-Job 'Fit' Hypothesis
A worker-to-job congruence model of a classic motivation theory was tested with weights applied to intrinsic and extrinsic work place factors reflecting the importance they held for individual respondents. A total of 401 registered nurses in a large Western metropolitan area of the United States served as the sample. The results indicated that when perceived importance of intrinsic factors are taken into account in a multivariate design, support …
Improving the Mental Health Care Delivery System for Elderly Nursing Home Patients
It is well known that the mental health care delivery system for aged nursing home patients is inadequate. Based on information gained from face to face interviews and from a mail survey of nursing home personnel, the range and usefulness of the resources and services available for mental health care in nursing homes are identified. This information is then used to derive recommendations for the development of a more effective mental health care …
On the Use of Facet Importance as a Weighting Component of Job Satisfaction
Though past research has not supported the strategy of using importance weights in constructing an overall index of job satisfaction from measures of satisfaction with diverse workplace facets, researchers should not be lulled into concluding that importance measures will not be useful in their research. Importance weights not only can contribute a good deal to scaling procedures when a multivariate framework is used that represents the additive …
Welfare Legislation and American Poverty Traps
We argue that legislative attempts to establish bureaucratic programs to eradicate American poverty will invariably result in ironic inconsistencies that will doom such programs to only limited or partial success. As an illustration, we examine the ironic history of the AFDC program as it has been legislated to deal with American poverty. Three sociological accounts for the ironies of welfare programming are then drawn together. One account sugge…
