Anticipatory Regulation
The UK has incorporated a net-zero emissions target into national legislation. A range of Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR) options will likely play a key role in the government's strategy toward meeting this goal. Governance frameworks will need to be developed to support GGR development and manage the potential impacts, particularly those on the diverse local communities where the various options will be deployed. This research examines the UK's exp…
Late glacial aster prairie at the Aubrey Clovis site, North Texas, USA
Cool, wet conditions late in the Younger Dryas in semi-arid New Mexico
A thick alluvial sequence in central New Mexico contains the Scholle wet meadow deposit that traces upstream to a paleospring. The wet meadow sediments contain an abundant fauna of twenty-one species of freshwater and terrestrial mollusks and ten species of ostracodes. The mollusks and ostracodes are indicative of a local high alluvial water table with spring-supported perennial flow but without standing water. Pollen analysis documents shrub gra…
New correlation of stable carbon isotopes with changing late-Holocene fluvial environments in the Trinity River basin of Texas, USA
A late-Holocene alluvial sequence in north-central Texas has a 1 m thick buried cumulic soil with an A-C profile called the West Fork paleosol. It formed 2300 to 1000 yr BP and is a local equivalent of the Copan paleosol that is present throughout the southern US Great Plains. Stable carbon isotopes indicate that the paleosol and underlying gray clay formed under vegetation dominated by C 4 species (mean δ 13 C: −18.3 ± 0.3‰). Diverse paleoenviro…
Holocene alluvial sequences, cumulic soils and fire signatures in the middle Rio Puerco basin at Guadalupe Ruin, New Mexico
We describe a geoarchaeological survey of a 5‐km reach of the Rio Puerco channel and its tributaries, centered on the Guadalupe Ruin, a pueblo of the late 10th–12th centuries A.D. in north‐central New Mexico, with associated pollen, charcoal, micromorphological, and radiocarbon analyses. Severe erosion has drastically bisected the Puerco valley with four primary arroyos entering the western side of the Guadalupe reach of the valley: Tapia, Salado…
Archaeological Geology of the Mescalero Sands, Southeastern New Mexico
The Mescalero Sands accumulated in two episodes, first during the late Pleistocene (90,000 to 75,000 years B.P) and second during the early Holocene (9000 to 5000 years B.P) based on OSL dates. Archaeological sites of all ages occur on the surface of the older eolian sand Sites later than 3000 B.C. occur on the surface of the younger eolian sand, and sites older than 3000 B.C. are buried within the younger sand unit. Historic coppice and paraboli…
Early Irrigation on the Colorado Plateau near Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico
The introduction of maize agriculture into the Southwest and onto the Colorado Plateau was accompanied by irrigation techniques. Twenty-six radiocarbon dates at two sites, K'yana Chabina and K'yawa:na'a Deyatchinanne, in the Zuni area of New Mexico, establish the use of irrigation canals to between 3,000 and 1,000 years ago. Associated features and the presence of nearby habitation sites independently corroborate the chronology of canal building.…
Middle Paleolithic Behavioral Organization
Excavation of a Levantine Mousterian rockshelter exposed two living floors in the upper part of a deposit more than 3.5 m thick. An intrasite study, focusing on the spatial patterns of data recovered from the two floors, complements an earlier intersite study of settlement and procurement patterns. The arrangement of hearths and the spatial distributions of artifacts and manuports indicate redundant behavioral organization for the two components.…
Pollen, Stratigraphy, and Chronology of the North Edge of Zuni Pueblo
The north edge of the Pueblo of Zuni, called So 'biyahna: wa (“Place Where the Sand Drops Off”), was formed by the accumulation of 3 1/2 m of wind-drifted sand interspersed with trash, deposited after the seventeenth century. The sedimentary sequence is dated by pottery and radiocarbon dates on charcoal that occur in the alternating layers of refuse and fine eolian sand. The pollen content of the cultural deposits and eolian sand is dominated by …
Grassland Vegetation in the Southern Great Plains during the Last Glacial Maximum
New pollen records from White Lake in the Southern High Plains and from Friesenhahn Cave on the southeastern Edwards Plateau of Texas indicate that the glacial-age vegetation of the southern Great Plains was a grassland. The High Plains was a treeless Artemisia grassland and the Edwards Plateau, at the south edge of the Great Plains, was a grassland with pinyon pines and deciduous trees in canyons and riparian habitats. The glacial-age grasslands…
Archaeological Palynology in the United States
Common problem areas in archaeological palynology include sampling, processing, counting, preservation, and interpretation. In this report, the authors present guidelines for researchers seeking pollen analyses, recommend the kinds of observations palynologists should make on their samples, and suggest ways of determining when samples should be considered invalid for paleoethnobotanical interpretations or paleoenvironmental reconstructions
Pollen Analysis and Paleoecology of Alluvium
Environment And Archaeology Of The Central Osage Plains
Evidence for prehistoric environments of the Osage Plains of Oklahoma during the past 11,000 years is evaluated and summarized. The late Pleistocene climate was generally cooler but with less severe winters. Little is known about the early or middle Holocene except that, by inference, middle Holocene climate was exceptionally dry compared to average conditions for the past 11,000 years. A generally dry environment persisted until about 2000 years…
Prehistoric Vegetation and Environment at Chaco Canyon
Pollen analysis of woodrat (Neotoma) middens indicates that the local vegetation at Chaco Canyon and the regional vegetation of the San Juan Basin, northwestern New Mexico, have been shrub grassland since at least 10,600 years ago. Plant macrofossils in the same woodrat middens indicate that pinyon pine trees were present in the canyon during much of the Holocene, but low percentages of their pollen grains in both the middens and in adjacent allu…

Buried Trees, Water Table Fluctuations, and 3000 Years of Changing Climate in West-Central Oklahoma
A sequence of radiocarbon-dated buried trees, buried soils, a carbonate zone, and a molluscan fauna from Carnegie Canyon indicate that between 3200 and 2600 yr B.P. the climate of west-central Oklahoma was drier than today. A high water table accompanied a period of moister climate 2000 to 1000 yr B.P. The water table dropped after 1000 yr B.P. due to a change toward dry conditions.
Late Holocene Paleoecology of the Southern Plains
Analyses of pollen and land snails from rocksheter sites in the Osage Hills of northeastern Oklahoma indicate that the period 2000-1000 yr B.P. was moister than today. During that time, colonies of the prairie vole Microtus ochrogaster were present in the Texas Panhandle. About 1000 yr B.P. the climate changed to dry conditions that have persisted to the present. Disjunct colonies of small mammals in Texas became extinct at the beginning of the d…
The Late Prehistoric Human Ecology of Birch Creek Valley, Northeastern Oklahoma
A multi-disciplinary study of the archaeological sites in Birch Creek Valley examined the valley’s paleoenvironment, prehistoric economy, and demography. The study indicates that during the Plains Village Period (ca. A.D. 800-1,500) the local environment was stable and similar to that of the area today with the valley being occupied during the late summer through winter by dispersed groups containing from 10 to 15 people. The Late Prehistoric occ…
