This article offers the first convincing interpretation of the strange, tapering tower south of Kilindini, together with an account of the excavation of the adjacent mosque, and observations about the town of Tuaca. • Excavations at the Site of Early Mombasa

    Hamo Sassoon•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•1980•Citada por: 23•Referências: 9

Arab historical sources make it plain that Mombasa was among the earliest towns of importance on the East African coast, but no archaeological work had been undertaken at settlement sites there. In this article Mr Sassoon gives an account of the work carried out at the site of the town to which the Arab authors were probably referring. Mr Sassoon was curator of Fort Jesus Museum from 1974 to 1976 and organizer of the Mombasa Wreck Excavation from…

    Open Access•Hamo Sassoon•ARTICLE•The Journal of African History•1967•Citada por: 30•Referências: 2

This paper describes a large area of stone-built ruins in northern Tanzania which has so far only been briefly excavated, but which is likely to prove to be a key site in the study of the Iron Age in East Africa. In addition to numerous massive stone circles, terraces and cairns, there are extensive systems of fields and enclosures defined with lines of stones. Excavations carried out in 1964 and 1966 have shown that the small terrace-platforms o…

  • Engaruka

    Hamo Sassoon•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•1966•Citada por: 14•Referências: 1

The ruins at Engaruka, at the foot of the Rift scarp south of Lake Natron, are the most extensive in the interior of East Africa, and the piecing together of their history is a most intriguing problem. In this article Mr. Sassoon, who is in charge of the Department of Antiquities in Tanzania, gives a report on the first season of what we hope will be continuing excavations at this important place. The site is also referred to in its wider setting…

  • Early Sources of Iron in Africa

    Hamo Sassoon•ARTICLE•The South African Archaeological…•1963•Citada por: 1

Iron in its metallic state is known to occur naturally in two ways, either as a rare constituent of the rocks of the earth's surface, or as the material of which some meteorites are made. Neither of these sources of iron, however, has ever been extensive enough to be of more than local importance. Almost all the iron which has been used by man has been extracted from iron ore by smelting and, although the two natural sources of metallic iron will…
