This paper focuses on the contemporary archaeology of a former working-class neighbourhood in Oulu, Finland, and traces the changes that took place in the lifestyle of the community in the 40-year postwar era from 1947 to 1987. This chapter discusses the role of women and children within early industrial communities, groups that are largely overlooked in industrial archaeological research. We use the early industrial Pikisaari pitch mill community in the town of Oulu, Northern Finland as a case study, which has yielded diverse archaeological evidence for the presence of women and children in the pitch mill area. Nestled in a quiet part of Oulu, Finland, on an Island called Hietasaari, was a residential area called Vaakunakylä.
