Abortion-law Attitudes and Correlates Among Female Sex Workers in Colombo
Unintended Pregnancy and Pregnancy Awareness among Female Sex Workers in Sri Lanka
Unintended pregnancy is a key marker of unmet sexual and reproductive health needs, yet quantitative evidence among female sex workers (FSWs) in Sri Lanka is scarce. We conducted a cross-sectional respondent-driven sampling survey among 551 FSWs aged 18-49 years in Colombo from March to June 2025. Using Gile's successive sampling estimator, we generated respondent-driven sampling-weighted prevalence estimates and described pregnancy awareness, te…
Changes in demographic components during the Covid-19 pandemic and economic recession in Sri Lanka
The objective of this paper is to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic recession on the three demographic components, namely mortality, fertility and migration in Sri Lanka and possible implications. A secondary data analysis of mortality, fertility, migration, and marriage data from the Registrar General’s Department of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Health was conducted. Although excess mortality (COVID-19 deat…

Still the 'Ireland of Asia'? Declining Female Age at Marriage in Sri Lanka
Unlike the rest of South Asia, female age at marriage in Sri Lanka reached a high level of 25.5 years by 1993 and declined thereafter to 23.6 years as reported by the 2006-2007 Demographic and Health Survey. This article examines this trend and potential contributors to the trend by using data from Population Censuses and Demographic and Health Surveys. The relaxation of the marriage squeeze with the more balanced sex ratio at the turn of the pre…
Seizing the Opportunity
During the past few decades, the total size of Sri Lanka's population and its age and sex structure have been exposed to major changes. Fertility decline commenced in the 1960s largely due to the p
Patterns of Sexual Vulnerability Among Adolescents and Youths in Sri Lanka
To elucidate the level of sexual awareness, behaviour and vulnerability experienced by adolescents and youths in Sri Lanka, data were collected from an island-wide survey of 4004 unmarried and married persons aged 10–24. Most 10–14-year-olds do not possess sufficient knowledge on sexual behaviour, or hesitate to acknowledge it due to prevailing cultural barriers. Females show less knowledge on sexual behaviour, while those in the estate sector in…

Contraceptive behaviour of abortion seekers in Sri Lanka
Data collected from 306 abortion seekers were used to investigate their knowledge of contraception, the type of contraceptives used at the time of conception, and their intentions for future fertility and post-abortion contraception. Even though three-quarters of the clients were using a contraceptive method at the time of conception, 74 per cent of these were relying on safe period and/or withdrawal. Only half of the users of traditional methods…
Induced Abortion in Sri Lanka
The sociodemographic characteristics of abortion seekers and the reasons they give for procuring termination were studied in 356 clients selected from two abortion clinics in the city of Colombo. Nearly 80% were Buddhists and about 10% were Christians. Almost all had some formal education but only 20% were employed outside the home. Over 95% were currently married and at the peak of their childbearing age. More than one-half were aged 30 years or…
Puerperal morbidity
Pregnancy is the period during which a mother prepares herself physically and psychologically for the delivery and care of the offspring. However, during this period the central concern is the welfare of the baby, but not the mother. When the mother and the child subsequently become two separate beings, the mother's health care is totally neglected unless she develops obvious symptoms of gross physiological and psychological abnormalities. This s…
Reproductive change in Sri Lanka
This study examines the intermediate determinants of fertility in Sri Lanka by making use of the data collected in the 1982 Sri Lanka Contraceptive Prevalence Survey and the 1987 Sri Lanka Demographic and Health Survey. The analysis shows that the most important inhibitor of potential fertility is deliberate control. The marital structure of the population is also an important fertility-inhibitor, but lactational infecundability is increasingly b…
Influence of son preference on the contraceptive use and fertility of Sri Lankan women
The effect of moderate son preference on family size is analysed using data from the 1982 Sri Lanka Contraceptive Prevalence Survey whose respondents were followed-up in the 1985 Sri Lanka Contraceptive Survey. Reported reproductive intentions on desire for additional children were not always reflected in overall contraceptive use. Complicating factors were the use of modern and traditional methods and the role of induced abortion. Longitudinal o…
Achievement of reproductive intentions in Sri Lanka, 1982-1985
The achievement or reproductive intentions of Sri Lankan women was examined by using longitudinal data for the period 1982-85. Aggregate consistency between reproductive intentions and behavior was almost perfect, but at the individual level there were inconsistencies. Among those who wanted to have no more children, 23 per cent reported a birth in the intersurvey period of 3 years and 2 months, while failures to have a wanted birth stood at 36 p…
Consistency Between Reproductive Preferences and Behavior
Data collected in the 1982 Sri Lanka Contraceptive Prevalence Survey and the 1985 Sri Lanka Contraceptive Survey, a follow-up study, were used to examine the reliability of respondents' preferences for additional children. At the aggregate level, consistency was remarkable: In 1982, 47 percent of women said they wanted more children and in 1985, 49 percent had more, for a slight excess of actual over wanted fertility. Even though inconsistencies …
