Global Voices of Trauma Recovery
Minimal research has examined culturally nuanced healing experiences across national landscapes, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of culturally relevant healing experiences for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). This paper explores these experience among 136 survivors of GBV across seven global contexts. Using the Clinical Ethnographic Narrative Interview-Trauma, after reflecting on their healing journey, survivors s…
The Impact of Gender-Based Violence on Bodily Perceptions and Connections
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a violation of human rights, referring to harmful acts directed towards another, rooted in unequal power dynamics within and beyond the gender binary. While we know that GBV greatly impacts survivor health, research has not been synthesized to articulate its impact on survivor bodily connections and perceptions. The purpose of this qualitative metasynthesis is to synthesize how GBV impacts survivors body image, bodi…
The Relationship Between Childhood Sexual Abuse and Executive Function for Those in Recovery from Opioid Use Disorder
Background Both having an opioid-use disorder (OUD) and experiencing childhood sexual abuse (CSA) can significantly impact brain functioning, particularly within the executive system. Little research, however, has teased apart how individuals with compounding experiences may differ in brain functioning and behavior compared to those recovering from OUD alone. Aims The purpose of this brief report was to understand the relationship between CSA and…
Healing the Cycle
Purpose The purpose of this brief report is to introduce the Integrative Healing Model for Intimate Partner Violence (IHM-IPV). This approach builds off the current evidence base of healing modalities supportive for survivors of IPV and best therapeutic practices to provide clinicians with a comprehensive framework to explore healing with their clients. Methods We reviewed evidence-based practices related to therapeutic modalities to support heal…

Measuring Healing and Recovery After Gender-Based Violence
Healing after gender-based violence (GBV) is multidimensional, with varying instruments used in the scientific literature to capture this phenomenon quantitively in survivor populations. The purpose of this scoping review was to (a) describe quantitative measures used to evaluate recovery after GBV, (b) compare these findings with domains uncovered in a qualitative metasynthesis about survivors’ perspectives about healing after GBV, and (c) summa…
Factors associated with cognitive flexibility in people with opioid-use disorder
The ability to adapt to changing circumstances has strong survival value. Individuals with substance use disorders tend to get "stuck" over-responding to drug-reward signals and pursuing drugs despite negative consequences. A lack of flexibility may be tied to impairments in neurocognition, including learning, memory, and executive function. However, results are often mixed, potentially due to heterogeneity in factors such as mental health, perso…
A Feasibility and Acceptability Assessment of Photo-experiencing and Reflective Listening (Pearl)
Photo-experiencing and Reflective Listening (PEARL) is a trauma-informed intervention developed to promote recovery engagement in survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). This study aimed to understand the feasibility and acceptability of PEARL and identify potential healing elements. GBV survivors were recruited in Philadelphia through an online survey ( n = 20). Participants completed the PEARL intervention, a postintervention survey, and a fo…
Establishing a Cutoff Score for the Healing after Gender-based Violence Scale (GBV-Heal)
Purpose To evaluate a cutoff score for the Healing after Gender-based Violence Scale (GBV-Heal)—an instrument to assess recovery progress for survivors of GBV. Methods We surveyed 321 women-identifying GBV survivors living in the Midwestern United States from April to December 2022 to evaluate their mental health symptom burden, trauma coping self-efficacy, sense of meaning, healing progress, and recovery stage. We used Receiver Operating Charact…
Enhancing the Recovery Process for Undergraduate Women Survivors of Sexual Violence
The psychosocial impact of sexual violence (SV) on college-aged women necessitates understanding positive influences of survivors’ healing processes. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate facilitators in the healing journey for undergraduate SV survivors. Seventeen women were interviewed using Photo-experiencing and Reflective Listening (PEARL). Thematic analysis revealed three core facilitators: (a) Support—formal and informal…
Restorative Justice for Survivors of Sexual Violence Experienced in Adulthood
Sexual violence (SV) is a widespread human rights issue. Survivors of SV often experience profound dehumanization and poor health outcomes when their trauma is not properly addressed, rendering it critical that they are honored and empowered within subsequent processes of healing and seeking justice. With adjudication through the criminal legal system largely underutilized due to retraumatization, scrutiny from law enforcement professionals, and …
Healing After Violence
This study investigated the Turkish validity and reliability of the Healing After Gender-based Violence Scale (GBV-Heal) and the relationship between social support perception, posttraumatic growth in university students who are victims of gender-based violence. The study sample consisted of 167 female students who experienced gender-based violence. The Turkish version of GBV-Heal of Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value was 0.892; the Bartlett Sphericity Tes…
Healing After Gender-Based Violence
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant violation of human rights, requiring specific understanding of how individuals heal and recover after these experiences. This article reports on findings of a qualitative metasynthesis that examined the nature of healing after GBV through the perspectives of female-identifying survivors. Empirical studies were identified by a search of peer-reviewed articles via electronic databases. Studies were inclu…
Trauma Recovery Rubric
Research is beginning to examine gender-based violence (GBV) survivors' recovery, but little is known about diverse recovery trajectories or their relationships with other distress and recovery variables. This interdisciplinary, international multisite mixed-method study developed and used the TRR to identify and classify survivors' trauma pathways. This study describes the phases of the initial development of the preliminary TRR (Phase 1), refin…
Capturing lifestyle changes and emotional experiences while having a compromised immune system during the Covid‐19 pandemic
This study aimed to describe lifestyle and emotional changes individuals with compromised immune systems experienced during the early months of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. A survey was distributed to online support organizations for those with chronic illness and a national research volunteer registry from April to June 2020. Participants were asked to document their experiences via three photo‐elicitation prompts, followed by reflecti…
Comparative Ethnographic Narrative Analysis Method
Narrative data analysis aims to understand the stories' content, structure, or function. However narrative data can also be used to examine how context influences self-concepts, relationship dynamics, and meaning-making. This methodological paper explores the potential of narrative analysis to discover and compare the processes by which culture shapes selfhood and meaning making. We describe the development of the Comparative Ethnographic Narrati…
The Healing after Gender-Based Violence Scale (GBV-Heal)
Current literature has primarily equated gender-based violence recovery with an improvement of physical or mental health symptoms, causing a gap in our understanding of the impact of interventions beyond the amelioration of adverse symptomology. The purpose of this research was to create an instrument to holistically measure gender-based violence recovery based on survivor healing goals. Ethnographic interviews were conducted in women-identifying…
The Stay at Home Order is Causing Things to Get Heated Up”
Psychometric Evaluation of the Healing After Gender-Based Violence Scale
These findings substantiate the reliability and validity of our instrument as an outcome measure that can be used both cross-sectionally and longitudinally with survivors of GBV
Healing is not linear
The purpose of this study was to describe the day‐to‐day healing processes of women who experienced undergraduate sexual violence. We engaged 19 women in a photo‐elicitation experience with follow‐up individual interviews to identify themes of both healing and darker moments in survivors' everyday lives. Healing was found to function on a continuum influenced by darker moments (i.e., moments that elicited fear, anxiety, loneliness, guilt, anger, …
Finding the Strength to Heal
Little research has focused on the trauma healing processes of gender-based violence (GBV) survivors, with most research focusing on adverse outcomes. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to explore the nature of GBV healing through survivor narratives. Our analysis revealed important barriers and facilitators of trauma healing. Social context was discovered to have a powerful influence over both barriers and facilitators. Analysis of the na…
