  • Who’s afraid of the perlocutionary

    Sandra Laugier, D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•Inquiry•2025

J.L. Austin’s insight that language should be treated as a domain of human action, rather than merely as a tool for the transmission of information, has been enormously influential. His analysis of speech acts continues to be widely utilised in a vast number of fields, from the philosophy of language to social and political philosophy, the philosophy of law, gender and literary studies, as well as a variety of social sciences. Yet scholars have s…

  • Critique Beyond Criticism

    Open Access•Sverre Raffnsøe, D Lorenzini et al.•ARTICLE•Foucault Studies•2025

Productive Crisis (2024/2025), 40-44.See also Sverre Raffnsøe, "What is Critique?Critical Turns in the Age of Criticism" (2017), for a discussion of the concept and history of critique in general, as well as of the prehistory of critique in particular (esp.36-37).

  • What Does It Mean to Diagnose the Present

    D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•Graduate Faculty Philosophy Journal•2025

I argue that, in Michel Foucault's work, archaeology and genealogy both have a diagnostic function, and in fact that they depend on each other to implement it. They should therefore be construed as the two aspects of the same method whose aim is to diagnose the present. I claim that, in turn, diagnosing the present does not consist in describing “what is happening” as a journalist would do, nor in a hermeneutical or therapeutic endeavor, but in s…

  • Truth, Asceticism, and Becoming

    Open Access•D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•Foucault Studies•2025

In light of the recent publication of an important volume collecting previously unpublished lectures and manuscripts by Michel Foucault on Friedrich Nietzsche, this paper discusses the (largely implicit) presence of Nietzsche in Foucault's later lectures and writings. In particular, I address Foucault's references to the notions of Wahrsagen and Wahrsager in connection with his own project to write a genealogy of truth-telling, as well as his pro…

  • The architectonic of Foucault's critique

Open Access•D Lorenzini, Tuomo Tiisala•ARTICLE•European Journal of Philosophy•2024

This paper presents a new interpretation of Michel Foucault's critical project. It is well known that Foucault's genealogical critique does not focus on issues of justification, but instead tackles “aspectival captivity,” that is, apparently inevitable limits of thought that constrain the subject's freedom but that, in fact, can be transformed. However, it has not been recognized that, according to Foucault, critique can proceed along two distinc…

  • Rethinking biopolitics

    Open Access•D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•Journal of European Studies•2024

In this article, I develop a critique of the forms of differential vulnerability produced by biopolitical technologies of power which became particularly salient during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, I address some conceptual and methodological questions linked to Foucault’s work on biopolitics, and I argue that one of his most promising insights is the claim that biopolitics necessarily entails a politics of differential vulnerability. I then dev…

  • On possibilising genealogy

    D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•Inquiry•2024

In this paper, I argue that the vindicatory/unmasking distinction has so far prevented scholars from grasping a third dimension of genealogical inquiry, one I call possibilising. This dimension has passed unnoticed even though it constitutes a crucial aspect of Foucault’s genealogical project starting from 1978 on. By focusing attention on it, I hope to provide a definitive rebuttal of one of the main criticisms that has been raised against (unma…

  • "What Is Critique?" and "The Culture of the Self"

Michel Foucault, Henri-Paul Fruchaud et al.•BOOK•What Is Critique? and the Culture…•2024

Newly published lectures by Foucault on critique, Enlightenment, and the care of the self. On May 27, 1978, Michel Foucault gave a lecture to the French Society of Philosophy where he redefines his entire philosophical project in light of Immanuel Kant’s 1784 text, “What Is Enlightenment?” Foucault strikingly characterizes critique as the political and moral attitude consisting in the “art of not being governed in this particular way,” one that p…

  • Foucault, governmentality, and the techniques of the self

    D Lorenzini•CHAPTER•Handbook on Governmentality•2023

In this chapter, I retrace the emergence of the notion of governmentality in Michel Foucault’s work. First, I show that the anatomo- and bio-political mechanisms of power that he explores in the 1970s have the government of human beings’ (everyday) life as a common goal. I then argue that Foucault elaborates the notion of governmentality as a response to the objection that his power/knowledge framework makes any attempt at resistance ultimately p…

  • Foucault Before the Collège de France

    Open Access•Stuart Elden, Orazio Irrera et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2023•Referências: 10

This introduction to the special issue 'Foucault Before the Collège de France' surveys Foucault's work in the first part of his career. While there is a familiar chronology to the books he published in the 1960s - from History of Madness to The Archaeology of Knowledge - the story can be developed in relation to his articles, his translations, his early publications and manuscripts, and his teaching. Looking at the programme of posthumous publica…

  • Philosophical Discourse and Ascetic Practice

    Open Access•D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2023•Referências: 1

This paper addresses the multiple readings that Foucault offers of Descartes' Meditations during the whole span of his intellectual career. It thus rejects the (almost) exclusive focus of the literature on the few pages of the History of Madness dedicated to the Meditations and on the so-called Foucault/Derrida debate. First, it reconstructs Foucault's interpretation of Descartes' philosophy in a series of unpublished manuscripts written between …

  • Reason Versus Power

    Open Access•D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•The Monist•2022

In this paper, I take issue with the idea that Michel Foucault might be considered a theorist of epistemic injustice, and argue that his philosophical premises are incompatible with Miranda Fricker’s. Their main disagreement rests upon their divergent ways of conceiving the relationship between reason and power, giving rise to the contrasting forms of normativity that characterize their critical projects. This disagreement can be helpfully clarif…

In a recent blog post, Joshua Clover rightly notices the swift emergence of a new panoply of “genres of the quarantine.”1 It should not come as a surprise that one of them centers on Michel Foucault’s notion of biopolitics, asking whether or not it is still appropriate to describe the situation that we are currently experiencing. Neither should it come as a surprise that, in virtually all of the contributions that make use of the concept of biopo…

  • Governmentality, subjectivity, and the neoliberal form of life

    D Lorenzini•CHAPTER•How Capitalism Forms Our Lives•2020

In this paper, I argue that the appropriate answer to the question of the form contemporary neoliberalism gives our lives rests on Michel Foucault’s definition of neoliberalism as a particular art of governing human beings. I claim that Foucault’s definition consists in three components: neoliberalism as a set of technologies structuring the ‘milieu’ of individuals in order to obtain specific effects from their behavior; neoliberalism as a govern…

  • The Emergence of Desire

    D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•Critical Inquiry•2019•Citada por: 9•Referências: 3

We are our sexuality," or at least we have been told so over and over. In a sense, there is no doubt that this goes without saying; we would not be able to think of ourselves, of our most fundamental psychological identity, without thinking of our sexuality, of this often deep and secret layer of our desires that reveals the type of individual that we are. 1 This hardly questionable remark was also the starting point of The Will to Know, the firs…

    Open Access•D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Rights Practice•2018•Referências: 2

As we mark the seventieth anniversary of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the ongoing contemporary publishing boom in the history of the origins of human rights affords us an opportunity to better understand the philosopher Jacques Maritain’s distinctive contribution to the post-Second World War human rights project. Daniele Lorenzini’s groundbreaking research into Maritain’s thought and activism during this period offers hu…

  • Confessional Subjects and Conducts of Non-Truth

    Open Access•D Lorenzini, Martina Tazzioli•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2018•Citada por: 25•Referências: 9

This article puts Michel Foucault and Frantz Fanon into dialogue in order to explore the relationships between the constitution of subjects and the production of truth in modern Western societies as well as in colonial spaces. Firstly, it takes into account Foucault's analysis of confessional practices and the effects of subjection, objectivation, and subjectivation generated by the injunction for the subject to tell the truth about him or hersel…

  • From Counter-Conduct to Critical Attitude

    Open Access•D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•Foucault Studies•2016•Citada por: 25•Referências: 1

In this article I reconstruct the philosophical conditions for the emergence of the notion of counter-conduct within the framework of Michel Foucault's study of governmentality, and I explore the reasons for its disappearance after 1978. In particular, I argue that the concept of conduct becomes crucial for Foucault in order to redefine governmental power relations as specific ways to conduct the conduct of individuals: it is initially within thi…

  • Must We Do What We Say

    Open Access•D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•European Journal of Pragmatism…•2010•Referências: 2

The central argument of this paper is that moral perfectionism cannot be understood in its radical philosophical, ethical and political dimensions unless we trace its tradition back to the ancient Greek conception of philosophy as a way of life. Indeed, in ancient Greece, to be a philosopher meant to give importance to everyday life and to pay attention to the details of common language and behaviour, in order to actively transform oneself and on…

  • What is a "Regime of Truth"?

    Open Access•D Lorenzini•ARTICLE•Le foucaldien•2015

In this paper, I offer an overview of the ways in which Foucault defines and uses the concept of 'regime of truth' in his works between 1975 and 1980, focusing especially on his lectures at the Collège de France On the Government of the Living. There, I argue, a substantial shift takes place, which corresponds to the emergence of the dimension of subjectivity at the heart of the concept of regime of truth itself. This shift bears witness to Fouca…
