Deductively coding psychosocial autopsy interview data using a few-shot learning large language model
Background: Psychosocial autopsy is a retrospective study of suicide, aimed to identify emerging themes and psychosocial risk factors. It typically relies heavily on qualitative data from interviews or medical documentation. However, qualitative research has often been scrutinized for being prone to bias and is notoriously time- and cost-intensive. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate if a Large Language Model (LLM) can be feasibly i…
‘I feel so alone… I am nobody, and I am nothing’. A psychosocial autopsy study on adolescent girls’ suicide, with a focus on sexual orientation
This study aimed to understand suicide among LGB or Questioning (LGBQ) and heterosexual adolescent girls in the Netherlands and to examine the role of their sexual orientation to their suicide following the sexual minority stress framework . Narrative interviews with 35 survivors of 18 female adolescents' suicide cases revealed approximately half of the cases as LGBQ. Thematic analyses of informants perspectives demonstrated three life trajectori…
Development of an implementation plan for a school-based multimodal approach for depression and suicide prevention in adolescents
Strong Teens and Resilient Minds (STORM) is a multimodal, school-based approach for depression and suicide prevention in adolescents that is currently implemented in a region in the Netherlands. The STORM approach will be implemented in new regions in the coming years. This study used the implementation mapping protocol to report on the development of the STORM implementation plan. Sociodemographic and psychosocial risk factors of railway suicide
based on our findings we propose and discuss several recommendations to prevent railway suicide. We must continue to invest in a safe railway environment by training personnel and installing barriers. Additionally, we should adopt prevention strategies that align the needs of subgroups at increased risk, including young females who have attempted other methods of suicide and young males with autism spectrum disorder. Future research should determ…
Guiding principles for the implementation of a standardized psychological autopsy to understand and prevent suicide
The stakeholder analysis delineates guiding principles for implementation. Stakeholders believe that a standardized psychological autopsy has merit, provided that key considerations, including valorization and accountability, are integrated in its design. Routine evaluation should be ensured. The findings may guide policy makers and researchers in their endeavors to support a learning, community-based approach for suicide prevention based on a st…
Forecasting call and chat volumes at online helplines for mental health
(S)ARIMA models can best be used to forecast the number of daily chats and phone calls with a MAPE of less than 10 in short-term forecasting. These models perform better than other models showing that the number of arrivals depends on historical data. These forecasts can be used as support for planning the number of counselors needed. Furthermore, the questionnaire data show that the workload experienced by senior counselors is more dependent on …
Detecting changes in help seeker conversations on a suicide prevention helpline during the Covid− 19 pandemic
While mentions of distraction, social interaction and plans for suicide decreased, expressions of gratefulness for the helpline increased, highlighting the importance of contact to help seekers during the lockdown. Help seekers under 30, male or who live alone, showed changes that negatively related to suicidality and should be monitored closely
Additional Value of Peer Informants in Psychological Autopsy Studies of Youth Suicides
In this study, we examined the feasibility and added value of including peer informants in a psychological autopsy study of youth suicides. Peer semi-structured interview data from 16 cases were analyzed qualitatively and compared to parent data. Results show that peers added information to parents' narratives in general and particularly on social relationships, bullying, school experiences, social media, and family relations. Peers also provided…
Demographic Risk Factors for Suicide among Youths in The Netherlands
In 2000 to 2016 the highest number of suicides among Dutch youths under 20 in any given year was 58 in 2013. In 2017 this number increased to 81 youth suicides. To get more insight in what types of youths died by suicide, particularly in recent years (2013-2017) we looked at micro-data of Statistics Netherlands and counted suicides among youths till 23, split out along gender, age, regions, immigration background and place in household and compar…
Characteristics Associated with Non-Disclosure of Suicidal Ideation in Adults
Suicide prevention efforts often depend on the willingness or ability of people to disclose current suicidal behavior. The aim of this study is to identify characteristics that are associated with non-disclosure of suicidal ideation. Data from the Dutch cross-sectional survey Health Monitor 2016 were used, resulting in 14,322 respondents (age 19+). Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the strength of the associations bet…
Improving Suicide Prevention in Dutch Regions by Creating Local Suicide Prevention Action Networks (Supranet)
The European Alliance against Depression (EAAD) program is to be introduced in The Netherlands from 2017 onwards. This program to combat suicide consists of interventions on four levels: (1) increasing the awareness of suicide by local media campaigns; (2) training local gatekeepers, such as teachers or police officers; (3) targeting high-risk persons in the community; and (4) training and support of professionals in primary care settings. The im…
Cross-sectional associations between maternal parenting styles, physical activity and screen sedentary time in children
No association was found between parenting styles and PA. However, an authoritative parenting style was associated with a reduction in SST and a neglectful parenting style with an increase in SST, especially in boys and in children whose mother had a medium education level. Future studies of parenting practices are needed to gain more insight into the role of parents in children's PA and SST levels, as a basis for the development of interventions…
